Reed vs Grinnell, which one has better academic reputation? [computer science and linguistics]

Lots of funny videos on YouTube by the Reed students about it. It is generally pronounced as Weed

Of the 3 Reed graduates I’ve known, 2 have been heroin addicts. They tried all manner of drugs as undergraduates, and by the time I met them in grad school they were addicted to heroin. One went into recovery.

If it were just weed, that’d be one thing, but it’s not. Kids are super smart and intellectual and really into whatever topic they’re studying, and they also are countercultural and so conventional attitudes about drugs are seen as sort of stupid/reflective of an unenlightened mind.

Things may have changed since the 1990s. Admittedly, America was coming out of the Reagan 80s and the whole say no to drugs thing. Now weed is legal many places
Maybe it’s different. And I’m sure there were non drug users there even back in the day.

But I would think carefully about the kind of kid you have before choosing Reed. I have one who would do just fine there, and one who I wouldn’t want blowing in that wind
 You know your kid.

Good luck with your decision.

From a statistical aspect, a Reed weakness may manifest in its admission yield, recently 14.2%.

Congratulations on your acceptances to both Reed and Grinnell! That is quite an accomplishment!

While I cannot speak to the quality of the programs at Reed, I can offer some perspective on Grinnell as my daughter is a first-year there. She is not a CS major but she knows many students who are and the program at Grinnell is very well respected. She also has a friend who is pursuing a Linguistics Concentration in addition to his major and he is very happy with the program and the professors.

The research opportunities at Grinnell are excellent as well. If you have not done so already, please look into the MAP opportunities which are described here:

The most important thing for you at this point is to visit both schools to get a better idea of where you would feel most at home for the next four years. We visited Grinnell and a variety of other LAC’s while our daughter was in high school and we were very pleasantly surprised by how much we all loved Grinnell.

I wish you all the best with the decision. You have a very bright and exciting future ahead of you!
