Some of you may want to check this out. I found it while searching on ebay. I already managed to get my copy of Reef Points. I heard it's risky but studying it ahead of time couldn't hurt.
USNA Reef Points

I don't see why it would be risky to study ahead of time. Most of the information hasn't changed for over 20 years.

You're not supposed to know Reef Points before you get there, although many do (including myself) because they study it before going to I-Day. They want you to read it and memorize it while you're THERE, so if you know it, just act like you're concentrating and learning it for the first time.

I got my copy as a gift a couple of years ago. I read it before Summer Seminar.

Doug

Yeah, my uncle gave it to me several years ago, so I read it before SS also. You think maybe we're a little overly anxious, Doug? ;)

sneaky sneaky.

Navgirl--No, I just want this more than anything in my life!

Doug

Navgirl is right, they make you cram down information for a reason. You'll be find yourself in simular situations like that in the fleet.

doug1, With that attitude, I hope you're in! :) Just realize it's not the only path to a commission.

Don't know where you've gotten your info, but "many" do not get a copy of Reef Points and memorize it before I-Day.

Even if you have it completely memorized, it will not do you much good, as the difficult part is not so much the memorization as it is the ability to recite facts under, well, less than optimal circumstances.

Why "game the game?" It isn't like you will get a blue ribbon for knowing the Code of Conduct cold. There's probably a reason why you aren't encouraged to grab a copy of Reef Points before you show up . . .

DeepThroat

Don't try to memorize your rates BEFORE you come to the Academy. Reef Points change from year to year and it really won't make a difference. Everyone starts in the same boat for a reason. Coming from the mother of a Plebe this year, I can tell you that you should be concentrating more on getting in the best physical shape and not worry about memorizing rates. The only thing you need know before you get there on I Day is the current Chain of Command and the USNA mission statement. These will be included in your Permit to Report packet. Stealth is the watch word for a plebe and it's never a good idea to show up your classmates!

midmom-
Are you sure that the rates change from year to year? I would have thought an awful lot of it was the same from year to year, but I guess I could be wrong.

I of course concur with midmom's rationale for discouraging "pre-memorizing" of Reef Points. However, the Rates plebes are required to memorize from Reef Points most certainly DO NOT change from year to year. "Why didn't you say sir?", Qualifications of a Naval Officer and the Code of Conduct haven't changed in a LONG time.

DeepThroat

This is true Deep Throat (love your name by the way), but my observation is that things are changing at USNA and it might just be better to wait until you are told to do it. My dad, brother, uncle and husband are all grads and they have noticed differences in my son's set of Reef Points from their years at USNA.

From what I've heard, the most important thing about plebe summer is to blend in. If you show up on I-day with Reef Points memorized, and nobody else in your squad has, then you will a) make you squadmates look bad or b) attract more attention to yourself.

"This is true Deep Throat (love your name by the way)"

Could you explain exactly what you LOVE about this guy's screen name? Quite frankly I find this user name offensive and certainly not in keeping with the "Moral" in the USNA mission statement. Is the moderator on vacation or stuck in the snow???

Wstcoastmom -

Dating myself, I know. But the first connotation I associate with "Deep Throat" is highly accurate inside source, from the Watergate days. Not the sexual connotation. I didn't find the screen name offensive at all.

Yeah, Deep Throat was the Watergate informant.

HAHA! Don't ever send your kid to the Navy then. You'll hear the nastiest jokes and languages ever! :D

One of the films currently being shown at the Sundance Film Festival is Brian Grazer's documentary "Inside Deep Throat," and it isn't about Watergate.
