This might sound like a really stupid question, but it's been over a year since I've written a paper and I can't quite remember if we're allowed to cite magazines (USNEWS, TIME) or newspapers (NY, LA) for an academic paper. My roommate said she's only allowed to use academic sources (books, academic journals) but I vaguely remember using newspapers as sources. Does it depend on the class? This is for poli sci btw.

I think it depends on the class. One of my professors requested that we cite an LA times article that he talked about, and another doesn't want anything but academic research.

Unless otherwise instructed against it, citing magazines and newspapers is usually alright for a research paper, providing that the source is reputable and trustworthy (i.e. No National Enquirer citations). If you’re looking for help on how to format those citations, check out this page: [How to Cite - Mahalo](http://www.mahalo.com/How_to_Cite)

Class does matter a lot, yes. Just to be safe, I would email the TA or Professor.
