Referencing the fact that you are applying to college?

Is referencing the fact that you are applying to college/that an admissions officer is reading this in your essays a no no? Not necessarily the common app, more the supplementals, especially those that ask "Why --insert college name here--?"

I.e. "Why me out of so many talented applicants?" And then answering
Or
If accepted to the Class of 2018
Or
As you look at a talented group of applicants I want you to know ((why I'm a good choice))

I don't intend to do this in my common app essay which is more of my story so to speak.

Don’t do this. It sounds arrogant, and they already know you want them to pick you anyway.

Agreed. It sounds like a student council speech…
“If I’m elected to Student Council, blah blah blah…”

No rhetorical questions sound dumb. They know they have talented applicants.

Why college isn’t the place to ask for admission. No place is, really, the application speaks for itself. It is the place to communicate why you and the college are a great fit.
