Reflect on a failure essay topic

After looking at the essay topics on the common app I've found that I had a great example for the "Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what lessons did you learn?" essay topic but I was wondering how this would reflect on me as an applicant

I was thinking of writing about not making the JV soccer team sophmore year and how that affected my identity and attitude through the rest of high school. However, when I start writing I always feel like I making myself out to be someone who didn't persevere enough and by recounting my failure I am admitting to flaws of character that colleges don't want to see in their applicants.

I really like the topic but it seems like it would be a bad idea to give the admissions officer another reason not to accept me.

That’s ok. You’re supposed to recount flaws in your character. Those are the reasons why you failed. They’re trying to see how you’ve learned from your mistakes.

I think you should go through with it. If this topic is meaningful to you, just try an be as honest as possible in telling it, and I’m sure admissions officers will like it!
