Reflecting on the 2014-2015 School Year

Hey guys,

I wanted to make this thread to reflect on this school year. I just finished my last exam of freshman year of high school today, yet it only feels like I finished first quarter. Now I realize what all of the upperclassmen were talking about when they said that high school goes by fast. Before I know it, it will be 2018 and I will be receiving my college acceptance letters. Wow…

What do you guys think? How did the school year go for you guys?

Hi, I just completed Freshman year too! Overall, it was nothing compared to middle school.

Going through semester finals for the first time was like getting slapped in the face. Never actually truly studied hard until now - ended up with all straight A’s in middle school and I never studied. Very different in HS. Worked my button off to end up with a 4.2 GPA this year.

Had some really amazing teachers (the kind who are really big on universal life lessons), along with some boring ones as well.

Wanted to claw my eyes out at some really immature classmates and those who sacrificed grades to be popular. You have bad grades Freshman year? Well you will pay for it your Senior year. Not my problem, I’m motivated enough to see the value of the light at the end of the tunnel.

Want to forget those embarrassing moments that happened throughout the year, especially on the first day of school.

4.3999999 GPA.

I honestly got too wrapped up in extracurriculars to really get a handle on things. Up until this point, I’ve never used a planner or organizational system in my young life, and now I regret it.

i got access to some opportunities over the summer, so I plan to work hard and study hard for the SAT and PSAT next year as well as AP World History, AP Calc BC, AP Chemistry… Ah…

I’m just tired. I have two more days of finals left. Woo. Crickets chirping

I feel like my sophomore year was really uneventful. I made a lot of new friends and had great teachers, but I’ll probably forget everything that happened this school year. I got mostly A’s and I had a 4.16 GPA.

The most AP classes I’ve taken simultaneously was 1… and I’m taking 5 next year. I also have to take the SAT and ACT.

It’s weird how just 2 years ago, I was stressing about my first year of high school. Two years from now, I’ll be stressing about my first year of college. Time goes by so fast…

Senior here. IT’S OVERRRR~
Anyways, this year was probably the worst and the best.

The good: got into 7/7 top colleges and am really excited about my future. I got some fairly big math awards at the beginning of the year too  I also realized how meaningful my fellow classmates were to me.

The bad: unusually large loads of homework and stress. This was because I spent so much time working on college essays. Also, many of my classes focused on humanities (my weakness), so the grades went down. I also neglected my honor societies and got kicked out of one of the two I am part of, so this val is only getting one honor chord.

I’m also sad that this section of CC won’t really apply to me anymore. Goodbye, High School Life?

I just finished my sophomore year! I really believe that 10th grade is a slap in the face for EVERYONE. It was definitely a slap for me. Freshman year was SO easy at my school. We had no homework and teachers curved tests too much.

Sophomore year was amazing for me academically but crushed me socially. I separated with my friends a little because I was sooo focused on school and my boyfriend (ex now! lol). I ended this year with great awards, a strong GPA, 100 hours of volunteering, amazing relationships with teachers, and varsity track. My SATs and ACTs were disappointing but I have enough time to get them up to 2100 till December.

Buuuut I also lost amazing friendships. My best friends turned into just friends. This year I became really competitive and I hated that so much. I wanted to be the best so I stopped helping my friends and classmates! I never want to be that kind of person so I’m definitely going to work on that.

Every year is always different and you always learn something new.

@Mayee107 CONGRATS!! I’m so glad you pushed through and worked hard to get into your top colleges! I can’t even imagine how you feel right now. What college did you end up choosing? Anyways, good luck this fall!

@kfaustria thank you so much! I’ll be heading off to Princeton. Anyways I wish you the best of luck in your junior year - you’ve finished sophomore year with a bang academically, and there are always ways to mend friendships or form new ones

Wow, I’m surprised as to how much I can relate with everybody! I remember getting really angry this year because of my class rank. I had a 5.062 GPA this year (I live in South Carolina and our whole GPA/grading scale is really weird) and ended up getting ranked 12 out of 522, just barely out of the top 10 of my class, mainly because our 9th grade class rank is based off of our grades in middle school, something I wish I had known before coming to high school with my mediocre 98s  Spanish 1, a CP class I took in 8th grade also probably weighted down my GPA as well. Anyway, I got 100s in AP Human Geography and Intro to Engineering, a Dual Enrollment class, so I’m pretty sure I will make top 10 sophomore year.

And the reason why I am fed up about being outside of top 10 is because they get a lot of benefits, such as parking spots close to the school, recognition at graduation, as well as their own breakfast at the end of the year

@kfaustria, I feel you in terms of losing friendships. I’ve been really good friends with this guy ever since I was in preschool. However I’ve been going to a lapse of social awkwardness/introversion ever since 8th grade, and as a result have been finding it hard to converse with him lately, as well as with many of my other friends–in group conversations with him involved I end up standing awkwardly off to the side, and as a result he starts making condescending remarks targeted at me (“You’re weird man,” “The violas suck (I play viola, and our section is often viewed to be the butt of the orchestra ;()”); I know these are jokes, but they sting, considering how sensitive I already am (grew up in a strict, conservative Asian Indian household and my dad is VERY vitriolic when he gets mad at me).

I have made some friends this year that I hang out with on a daily basis, however one of them is bigoted and really arrogant, making the atmosphere less enjoyable for me. I also found out that my friends are into rap music, something I was off the radar about until this year.

As for next year, I am taking AP Stat and AP World, as well as Chemistry and Precalculus. I hope to become a much more sociable, less insecure human being that can foster better relationships by next year haha.

@mayee107 Congrats on getting into Princeton!

And yeah, @PurpleEagle, middle school was definitely NOT on the same caliber that high school is on, haha. This came as a big shock to me, as I am in my school’s STEM program and we had to double up on Physical Science and Biology. Learning about the electron transport chain was NOT fun…

As far as embarrassing moments go I remember spending 45 minutes trying to find my Spanish class on the first day of school :stuck_out_tongue: That was quite the experience…

@ish512 I’m so happy I’m not the only one with the same problem! I’m just relieved this school year is over. We always have next year to meet new, amazing friends!
