What are the high and low lights of 'A Day with Andover'? Did you get what you wanted out of it? Reflect away!

Incredible. I want to go to Andover so much more now. People were nice, and it seemed to good to be true.

What part of it did you like best? The teachers? students? facilities? the weather? If it looks too good to be true, it probably is!

I guarantee it wasn’t the weather! Brrrrrr!

Yah, it was Penguin’s dream weather.

I liked the Athletic Open House the best. I met some really nice people, and it seemed like a great environment. The talent show was pretty cool as well.

Were there a lot of people, long lines to meet the faculty?

@pulsar,
There were a ton of people, but I always got to meet with the faculty I wanted to. The lines weren’t that bad, most people were pretty thinly spread out around the campus.

Aah, that proves that education is recession-proof. Now I want to be teacher or an AO.

@pulsar,
I think Andover is “recession-proof.” According to what my dad heard in the parent’s meeting, Andover has gained back all the money it lost in the recession.

That’s good news. Hopefully they will give out more FA this year.

Rellielou, Periwinkle, itgirl5: Did you learn what all you wanted to learn? What did you learn that you may have otherwise missed during the regular tour?

Did you attend, pulsar?

No. That’s why I’m trying to find if I missed anything that’s not part of the tour.

Everyone we interacted with was very warm (in contrast with that weather) and we had some questions about placement answered. We really liked the math team coach.

I will say that I had been thinking of Andover and Exeter as being very similar, and after yesterday, I really feel that Andover deserves the reputation it has as a humanities school. Not a single one of the student panelists mentioned math or science, though they all waxed eloquently about history, English, art, music, etc.

Pulsar, were you here? If so, what was your impression?

FWIW, Andover gives out substantially better financial aid than most colleges, Brown included. It’s also need blind, so it supposedly doesn’t admit students in such a way to decrease their aid commitment. It does rely heavily on donations for financial aid, though.

Exeter generally does substantially better than Andover in math competitions. The majority of Andover students want to stop math as soon as possible, though many go through calculus. With that said, I have heard discontent from Exeter students about their lower and mid level math classes. It sounds like they have more good mathematicians, and they certainly offer math courses well above the level that Andover does (beyond multivariate calculus and linear algebra), but they’re no better for the average student. Andover’s not shabby at math either, though…I went there and was able to skip several semesters of math in college due to my coursework, and math is now one of my majors. Not all of the teachers are good, but the staff includes several very good teachers who do more than just teach upper level courses.

Thanks for your reply, Uroogla. It helps to clarify things.

Rellielou, No, I didn’t attend. Thanks for your observations. But from the tour, the only issue I have is it appears college like where some can fall through the cracks just based on the sheer number of students and the chaos it can create. I’m in a small school environment where you get to know everyone by name.

Uroogla, This is the issue I have with your comment about some teachers being not so good. If a private school can’t get rid of the bad teachers, what is the difference between it and public schools?

I went! It was really a great way to find out more about the school and I absolutely loved it! My favorite part was the student panel discussion and the talent show
@pulsar, sorry you didn’t have the chance to go during the revisit day if you get accepted i’m sure you’ll get a better feel of the environment and if it fits what you want.

Can you judge a school by the student panel discussion? For all I know they may be members of their debate team or MUN. May be you need to talk to an average student that you randomly run into on campus, not the members that are part of a show who can be prepared/coached as to what they say.
