reflections on accepted student weekend

having just returned from carleton i am wondering (of those who also made the trip)...
what did you notice/like/dislike?
how do you feel about the environment?
have you made a decision?

My son visited about two weeks ago (not on the accepted students weekend) and whatever he saw made him cancel a trip to another college scheduled for the next week and call me from his layover in St. Louis. He felt that strongly. His host made sure he met lots of students, and that is probably why he decided to attend.

Well, I'm an ED kid, so I didn't really have to make a decision. However, I was quite happy with my visit on 7-9 April 2005.
-What I noticed/liked/disliked about the environment/other: The student body knew how to have fun. I was sitting out on "The Bald Spot" on a perfect-weathered Friday, where I was invited several times by students I had never met before to play Ultimate [their mistake--I'm terrible] or just toss the frisbee. I also got to hear an unorganized jazz combo complete with conga drums jam on the grass. The nights were raquetball games [unfortunately bad at that as well], an all-third floor Musser trip to see Sin City, giving a play by play to the movie Clueless while the people in the bunk above me laughed in their drunkeness, spooking people at the Japanese gardens, and attempting to dance at the WHOA (?) all-hip-hop event. Needless to say, a lot of fun was had. I also noticed that the students are very academically inclined. I sat in on a couple of classes [a religion and poli sci one] and noticed the students were engaged but also humorous and noncompetitive. Both by day and by night, the students at Carleton seemed quirky, funny, and enjoyable as people. There is a strong community presence at Carleton. I was also glad to see the high turnout for Micheal Medved [despite his arch-conservative beliefs] for the convocation on Friday. Although I personally disagreed with him, I found his remarks interesting and was pleased that Carleton can attract the likes of him every Friday morning. Sometime in January/February, I kind of regretted applying to Carleton ED. However, after my visit, I am sure it'll be a good place for the next four years.

My son wen't to Carleton from Texas 2 years ago, and he likes it so much he is staying for the summer.

Well I just got back from an overnight at Carleton. I stayed on a monday and therefore there was not much to do. It was raining most of the day and cold. That being said I actually did have a decent time. I love the library setting it is very conducive to work. (I caught up on the work I was missing for the visit there.) Some of the kids I met were absolutely hilarious. Everyone was really friendly. My tour guides were excepotionally cool. I attended two classes one was pretty good, the other a complete dud. (I was told that the bad class was taught be one of the worst teachers there and that he will be leaving next year though.) All in all a good visit. I handed in my deposit just before I left. I am psyched, see you guys there.

My son would concur. The kids were the best part of the visit.
