refrigerators

does anyone know what the wattage of the refrigerators they rent out at cornell is? i'd like to know so i can buy one that's not of too high a wattage.

"Due to wattage requirements, refrigerators must be those rented by the University vendor or another of the same wattage requirements."

but what exactly ARE the wattage requirements? i emailed them and they won't answer.... i think it's all a scam to make money by renting out more refrigerators.

You got it dude... They squeeze ya wherever they can. Try emailing them closer (but not TOO close!) to the academic year, maybe they will be more responsive.

Can you buy refrigerators? What are wattage requirements? How much does renting cost?

Oh, I didn't know there were wattage requirements.

I hope my mini-fridge meets them (I won it last year at prom)

Here is the web site for Microfridge. I now understand why they rent these...one plug and limited power drain. IF you look at all the appliances that students bring there is probably a real power problem in the dorms. Here is the link but it doesn't show the watts for the fridge, I could find only the microwave... they look like nice units. When we see what the rental cost is we'll have to decided to buy or rent.

hmm. . .i should be ok with just a mini-fridge and no microwave, right?

I would think so. We're going to wait until we get a dorm assignment and then decide if he's buying a fridge...he'd probably only use the microwave for popcorn anyway! He definately wants a fridge though! Do you have a room assignment yet?

No, I don't have my room assignment yet. . .i think we get them mid-July.

I'm not worried about a microwave, because if I ever wanted to pop popcorn, I think some dorms have small kitchen areas near the lounge areas, or I could just ask someone else to use there microwave. Cornell's food seems to be fantastic, so I don't think I'll be in need of a microwave for anything else but popcorn.

Listen and listen carefully. No one cares once you get there. This is another example of a thing where it sounds like Cornell is really picky, but, in reality, the opposite is true. Just get a normal mini-fridge, throw it in the corner, and fill it with booze. No one will think twice, and no campus officials will come knocking on your door asking you about the wattage of the thing. They make it sound like this huge issue where the fate of your existence hangs in the balance, but it really is not.

so true for any college really. It's not like they go to your room and check what you have.

are you sure? i was talking to someone who said they actually tripped the circuit breaker from using a microwave that was too powerful.

Wattage is generally not a problem with fridges. It's mostly microwaves and blow dryers that tend to trip the circuit breaker.
