Refund if I cancel Housing Contract?

So I’m about to pay the $225 to complete my housing contract, but I can’t find anywhere if I get a refund if I choose not to go to UF and I cancel (before or on May 1). For FSU, they said the cancellation fee comes out of what I paid for the housing contract (meaning I get some sort of refund with the remaining payment). I can’t find anywhere if this is the case for UF. I know I’d need to pay a $125 cancellation fee, but is that separate from the $225? Or do they take $125 out and refund me $100? I would hope so! But I want to make sure if anybody knows.
I don’t know if their hours include Saturdays or I’d call to verify. Please let me know!

I called and was told if I cancel by may 1st and DO NOT attend UF I get $100back but if I cancel and do attend (choose to live off campus) I get NOTHING BACK. It would appear the 125 comes from that deposit.

I forget the dollar amount but last yr we paid the deposit with the housing contract, decided not to attend, and received a partial refund. I recall it left us “out” $150 or something like that. I viewed it as an insurance policy for getting housing at UF if S decided to go there. Big scheme of things, drop in the bucket but it was a little annoying.

Rickle1 ,can I ask where your son ended up? We are trying to make a decision . People act like when we are crazy when we mention he may not choose UF over UCF or FIT.

@Caugheyboymom My best friend was actually deciding between uf, ucf and embry riddle before he chose uf. If you have any questions feel free to ask. I know its stressful but overall he is so happy he chose uf for so many reasons.

Caugheyboymom, what is your son’s intended major?

He is planning on ComputerEngineering/ computer science. He had toyed with the idea of Biomedical Engineering as well. UcF doesn’t have a Biomedical engineering Undergraduate BUT has a new this year cohort called MEDD. pretty exclusive and he would earn two degrees in 4 years. (Biomedical sciences and engineering of his choice) we are super impressed with the Burnett honors college and what they offer for classes.the year round lease at the Towers and huge research park right next to university make us think that internships/jobs might be a little easier to come by. My head hurts thinking of the two schools, lol.
Is it true that all the emails about merit aid are out for UF?

@Caugheyboymom I can assure you that UF has no lack of internship opportunities and our location does not affect us in this aspect. We have recruiters here all the time and HUGE job fairs every semester that many of the engineering classes are required to attend.

The internship opportunities at uf do sound great, how do these kids go off and do a summer internship and have housing for such a short period?

Hey guys, I am undecided if I should go to UNF or UF. I’ve been told that UF should be a definite, but I am unsure because I can save money if I go to UNF. For instance, I would not have to pay room and board at UNF but would at UF. My tuition is payed for so it mainly comes down to room and board costs which range from $2,500 to $3,000 a semester at UF. Overall, if I could get some sort of discount on my room and board I would choose UF. Lastly, I want to do medicine and if I go to UNF for my prerequisites and undergrad I feel like my application for med school won’t be as strong.

@magicalzack1062 definitely uf and loans. You’ll make it up in better job opportunities. Also you discount post freshman year scholarships. I know people who got way more money junior and senior year from smaller targeted by major scholarships that add on to what you get now. Most money she got was senior year. Also work with financial aid office after they email you package.

@Caugheyboymom S chose Wake Forest and is loving it. Hard to compare the two. Small private vs. large public. Different in so many ways. Better fit for him.

@magicalzack1062 DO NOT PICK UNF because you think it will make your med school application stronger. Yes, UF has extremely difficult science classes, but if you’re committed you can handle them. UF will have so many more research and volunteering opportunities and no one wants a doctor that took the easy way out just to get into med school. Also, so many pre-meds change their major or discover something they like more. at uf, there will be many more opportunities in other career fields.

^^^very good points. So many kids / parents worry about the difficulty of the premed science track. If that is excessively difficult, how could one possibly handle med school? Good to find out early if that path is a good one for you. Seize the day and build confidence in whatever path you take.
