regardin my toefl score..

im an international student studyin in an american international school..and i got 500+ for my verbal sat score..i heard from my friend not to ace my toefl if u dun have a decent sat score..iz it true..and i juz did toefl and it ranges between 197-247(im sure i aced the essay part)..i thought i might have done better than that..it really scares me..

To which colleges are you going to apply?

the selective schools are demanding 250+

which "enlightened" person told you to do badly on your test? Ace your TOEFL! It'll show that you know your English and you can write decent essays without outside help. Aim for something in the 270's.

i think you misunderstood him, he must have said not to take toefl too seriously if you have a decent sat score as its much easier than sat.....but yea, most schools ask for 250+ , so you might have to take it again, and yea as mishra said, aim for 270+

im gonna major in ee..purdue, uiuc, and uw..r colleges able to c dat i took toefl twice?

I got 250 on TOEFL and applied to MIT, and failed..

What do you think guys what TOEFL score is good for HYPM?? Is 270 sufficient?

even 300 on toefl, 2400 on sats won't gurantee you admission into MIT !! understand this, the test results aren't everything in your application, your ecs, your overall academics, recommendations, essays etc. are of prime importance as well !! and about toefl, seriously its the least important....get above 250 and thats it.</p>

they are not everything, but they are the main factor along with your high school transcript, aren't they?

I agree with adides. College admission is an extremely complex issue in which scores and grades are not the only factors considered. I think that many students underestimate the value of the essays, recs, and ECs, while they fret too much over their scores. Certainly, scores are important, but after a certain minimum, other factors in college admission are considered more closely. For the TOEFL, I suppose this minimal score should be somewhere about 260-270, because such a score shows that the student has substantial knowledge in the language. And the 260-270 range pertains mainly to the more selective colleges, since there are internationals studying in the usa with scores such as 220.

My impression is that scores don't matter very much after an initial screening. That is to say, after you got a decent score (270+ TOEFL CBT, 680+ for each SAT section), they won't matter in the final admission decision. But I do think that decent scores (which need not be 2400 and 300) make you a competitive applicant, whereas lower scores drastically reduce chances. Just like the interview - ace it and you're still in the game, blow it and you're most likely out.
