regarding asians in the admission pool..

recently somebody said to me that asians (asian americans) are like quote: "the jewish students in the 1970s"
Do you think this is true?

whoa there are asians in austria?

what did jewish students do in the 1970s?

i'm korean. my dad is a diplomat

cool. anyway-i think shrek2004 what gg204 is saying is that in the 1970s there were a lot of supersmart overrepresented jews in the application pools back then. they still are kind of overrepresented.

i think its funny how Jewish students think asians are so smart and asians think jewish kids are so smart. In reality, they're both REALLY smart. Well in this case, the stereotype holds true. And don't tell me "Well so-and-so is jewish/asian, and he's dumb as a nut." of course there are exceptions, but overall, that's the impression i get.

ahhh...umm ive heard that and im sure its true since asians are only 2 or 3% of the total US population yet they are 20-25% of overall universities...ive heard that quotas actually work against asians...sucky sucky since im a china boy

ur rite encomium..^^
i hope it is not so extreme though

there are so many stereotypes about asians...
but its not always true!!
first of all i suck at math and i'm not good at science...hmmm

"first of all i suck at math and i'm not good at science...hmmm"

welcome to my life at princeton.

arnold schwarzenegger is the man

wait a minute here... how many of those asians who are 25% of college students are asian americans and how many are asian asians??? You see, if, say 10% are asian americans, then they are overrepresented but I wouldn't put asians from outside the US as overrepresented coz ultimately they will most probably go back to their countries and aren't part of the American population at all, they're just internationals like any other: European, African, etc...

I think Asian Americans have a harder time; ie it works against them. But international is always hard so Asian Asians wouldn't have a easy time either

zant--i agree completely. i hate when non-asians who think they understand admissions (and affirmative action) so well try to explain the whole process

LOL...LAgal: I find that annoying too. People are always like "oh, I think this [insert name of asian student]" will have a huge advantage over so and so because of affirmative action"....I'm like NO! Asians get zero preference...and even probably has that factor working against them. It makes me mad.

asians are what we in the admissions business like to call "ORM"s - over represented minorities. when, you apply to a college, you are basically competing against people like yourself. if you are a asian or white male jew from new york, the competition is going to be very tough because they don't want to have a class full of asians and jews from new york.

weird thing is, I don't know a single asian from my school who went to princeton, and we send a good handful each year...

Admissions is done by region, and there are plenty of asian kids from manhattan who go.

mzhang23. how big are the regions do u know? and are internationals all classified under one region? or are canadians different? thx

asians ROCK!
