Regarding ChBE at GT

Questions regarding the ChBE program:

1) I get that the title of the program is CHEMICAL engineering, but exactly how much chemistry is involved? I'm interested in chemistry -- don't get me wrong. I love chemistry (<3). I would also, however, like to see bunches of physics in the program as well.

2) I don't go by rank too much, but in relation to other engineering schools (AE, ME, BME), the rank is not as high (ChBE #9 vs #2s). Does this reflect upon the ChBE school itself? Do you ChBEs tend to have good job placement? (Note: This question is in no way trying to demean the program.)

3) Hypothetical: Say someone were to be a senior in the ChBE program, and let's say they want to go to med school. Would the ChBE curriculum have prepared this student for the MCATs? If not, what extra classes would have to be taken outside the normal curriculum? If not, how is the BS/MS program?

4) Hypothetical 2 (Revenge of the Fallen): Say student XYZ is a ChBE student. He doesn't want to go near the food industry. Can he veer away from a food industry track? What jobs would be open to him?

5) Please explain the Biotech option. If it applies, would the biotech option help Student XYZ (from Question 4) achieve his goal? Additionally, what doors would open up to Student XYZ if he were to do the track?

6) Are there many research opportunities?

7) Is it fun? Why did you choose ChBE instead of any other engineering program (or a Chemistry degree)? If you are a student/alumnus, how are you/ how did you enjoy the program? Any pointers for a [possible] student? Possibly the most important question.

8) Anything else you'd like to add about the program?

In advance, thanks for the time! I may ask follow-ups or more questions if I figure any more.

bump!

Please respond!

1) You need chemistry to understand processes and to help solve problems. The field is not all based on chemistry alone.

2) You should look into gatech’s co-op program. There are a lot of opportunities for students to find great jobs in it. Gatech should have something on their site that shows what companies visit the campus.

3) Most med students go BME from what I’ve seen.

4) Are you assuming that chemical engineers work primarily in the food industry? There are a lot of other fields to work in like chemicals and energy (oil and gas, electricity) to name a few.

5) Biotech option isn’t really much different. You probably have nearly the same opportunities with both.

6) There are a lot of research opportunities. You should search for it on gatech’s site.

7) I enjoy it. Some students say it’s really hard and some change majors.
