Regarding F-1 Visa

Hi,

I have my Visa interview on the 26th and I am quite nervous. Does getting a F-1 Visa for an undergraduate course become easier for someone receiving a full scholarship? ( The University is quite low ranked though! )

It all depends on where you are from, really. The consulate can reject just about any F-1 application using the intent-to-immigrate clause. (The burden is on you to prove that you intend to leave the US after college. Unfortunately, young adults don’t usually have any “binding ties” to their home country. If you did want to stay in the US after college, you probably could.)

It seems to depend on the country how serious the consulate really takes this. In some countries the interview seems to be a formality, while in others many applications get rejected. Overall 1/3 of all F-1 applications are denied, most based on the intent-to-immigrate clause. The degree of suspicion might be higher if you attend a college that’s unknown in your country of origin. (I’ve heard many Indian students claim, for example, that it’s no problem to get a visa to attend Stanford, but that it’s really difficult to get a visa approved for a low-ranked university.)

Can good academics ( 2150 SAT and 3.9 GPA ) and Full scholarship covering tuition, fees, room and board override the low university ranking?

I have heard getting a full scholarship really helps when applying for a Visa? Is it true?

* The University I have chosen is a public university - University of Louisiana at Monroe. Does going to a public university help? *

Did you get your visa Americandreamer?

Yes, I did! The interview was a cake walk, it lasted for about a minute or two. :)

^ Thats wonderful. Congratulations :)

Aww congrats on getting the visa :D

I have a question, to get the full ride did you have to have proof that you could pay for the coa? :)

@ohitskayleigh: If I had to show that I could pay the full COA, I would have never received the full ride scholarship because I do not have that much money!

I just had to show a bank statement worth $2000 to the college.

@Americandreamer- Did you carry unofficial score reports of SAT and TOEFL for visa interview or did you have the official reports?

I donot have the official reports so I will carry unofficial ones attested by my school. Would that work?

@SAT456 - I had the official reports and fortunately the VO did not ask any documents other than the basic ones like the I-20, DS-160 confirmation and the passport.

If you have a good academic record ( GPA and SAT score ) and a healthy financial aid package, I am sure you won’t be asked anything either!
