No, you apply for most scholarships at the beginning of your senior year.

You are not too late to start applying. There are plenty of opportunities for 9-12 grade students that you can find on FastWeb.com. A lot of people don't like using FastWeb, but it's a good start to your scholarship search. A key to using FastWeb successfully is to update your profile frequently (once every two weeks or so) as you'll get more personalized this way. I'd sign up for other resources as well like CollegeBoard.com and ThomsonPetersons.

Most scholarships are just for seniors (you should start looking for those next summer), but there are a few for juniors:

Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship (due January 31, 2008) -- up to $30,000 in scholarship funds. See Discover Financial Services: Community Affairs: Scholarship Program for more.

Executive Women International Scholarship (due in January 2008) -- up to $10,000 in scholarships. Starts with your local chapter (see http://www.executivewomen.org/ScriptContent/scholarships/ewisp.cfm). Houston has an EWI Chapter, and here's their website: EWI - Houston Chapter. I would check with your school to see if they're involved. If not, contact the folks at EWI to find out where to get an application.

I'd check around in your community (HS career and college center) and on the web. Google-search key phrases like "high school junior scholarships houston TX" and other similar searches. Good luck!

I started searching for scholarships my junior year. True, most of the scholarships that I found were for seniors, but I let that work in my favor. I set up a google calendar. Everytime I found a scholarship that couldn't apply for until my senior year, I added it to my Google Calendar for a couple months before the due date. Come senior year, I didn't have to do much research at all. I knew when all the scholarship dates were coming up.

The earlier you start looking, the less likely it will be that you will miss an important scholarship deadline.

Also, make sure you become bestfriends with your guidance counselor. They are a very important part of applying for scholarships. Your counselor can truly make or break your scholarship applicaiton!

Good luck!
