Recently, I found a section in the USC application rules which mentioned that unaccredited students, such as homeschoolers, must take three SAT subject tests in order to be admitted.
Now, this rules out my chances of applying to USC because of the application deadline for both the main school and the film school, but it got me thinking that perhaps many colleges required something similar. Do they? Is there a list of colleges that require SAT subject tests to be taken by unaccredited students?

I'm kinda freakin out here because now I feel even more behind the ball on the whole application process then I already was. Also, if it helps in answering the questions at all, I have taken both the ACT and SAT once and scored 32 and 2170, respectively (which means I probably wouldn't have been able to get into USC anyway, but oh well). Thanks for any and all answers.

Your SAT and ACT look fine for USC. I recommend you apply for both USC and the School of Cinematic Arts by the December 1st deadline, and schedule your SAT subject tests as soon as possible: You can still register (late fee applies) for the December 4th sitting, and you can take two or three subject tests at that sitting.

USC accepts the December 4th test date for the December 1st application deadlines. If you cannot fit all the subject tests you need into that date, schedule the rest for the January test, which is acceptable for the non-scholarship deadline at USC.

Again, the scores you have achieved on the ACT and SAT so far are fine for USC - both are in the middle 50% of accepted students.

Bump

Also, thanks alamemom. I didn’t know that they accepted dec. 4 test scores.

To the rest of you: Is the requirement of subject tests for unaccredited students typical of colleges?

It is becoming less and less common. Back when my son was applying (3 years ago) several colleges wanted 5! Harvey Mudd was one, but I emailed them and asked them, w/r/t my son’s particular situation (he had 7 AP scores of 5) and they assured me that would be ok. He actually did end up with 4. Pomona also had the 5 requirement, but now they want either more APs or SATIIs or other things.

My daughter’s friend is looking at USC, so i am taking both girls for a tour. I noted the 3 SAT IIs, so I wrote them. I told them my daughter has 9 AP scores, plus is National Merit, has a 2380 SAT score. They wrote back and said it was non negotiable. So, we will not bother applying. I am unimpressed with such an inflexible policy. Well, it really what my daughter wants, anyway. I suppose if she really were interested, we might jump thru that hoop and take an extra.

There is a Homeschool section to ask your questions.

Hi anotherparent!

I just wanted to mention that USC offers a 1/2 tuition scholarship (about $21,000/year) to accepted NMF.

USC accepts the December 4th sitting for the December 1st scholarship deadline, but in addition to that, the January test date would work because the NMF scholarship is awarded even if you do not apply by the December 1st scholarship deadline. You have until January 10th to apply and still be eligible for the 1/2 tuition.

Good luck!

I know, but sadly, D wants small LAC- and has her heart set on one of the Claremont Colleges. That half scholarship is really great though.
