My daughter has excellent GPA and SAT scores and so I was surprised that she did not receive an invitation to the chancellor's reception and concluded that UCSB was not much interested in her. Then today, out of the blue, she received an envelope from UCSB giving her a Regents Scholarship. Isnt this inconsistent? If they wanted her enough to give her a scholarship, why wouldnt invite her to the reception? In addition, does receiving this scholarship mean that she has been admitted?

I was concerned as well because many of my friends received the invitation. However, I assume UCSB got my mail address wrong (I checked my application and my address is correct) because they sent me an email asking to verify my RSVP to the reception.

Have your daughter check her email, it seems she should have gotten an invitation. Perhaps they got your address incorrect as well?

The last email received from UCSB was on January 24. In addition, they have our correct address since they mailed her the Regents Scholarship. It’s interesting that the scholarship states that it includes automatic acceptance into the college honors programs, but when my daughter logs onto her UCSB account it states that her admission decision is still pending. So, I guess she has been admitted into the college honors program but not the college. Strange.

I just received a letter in the mail today, first I have heard from UCSB. I got the regent’s scholarship. I called the office to inquire a bit more, and they told me that IF you are admitted in March, then you will get the scholarship. However, if you received the scholarship in the first place, you are most likely one of top applicants, and will probably get into UCSB. Hope that helps. I never got a Chancellor’s reception invite, and I hadn’t even heard of it until today.

I’m in the same boat as ndude. It was a pleasant surprise to find the envelope from UCSB. I wasn’t expecting it at all since they didn’t even admit me yet. Although I had my heart set on Irvine, I’m now considering UCSB too (that is, if I get in). Congrats to all those who’s received a scholarship! Good luck to UCSB hopefuls!

Daughter received the invitation to the chancellor’s reception today. Wonder why it was sent to her so late. Between UCSB and UCI daughter is also currently leaning towards UCI. Unfortunately, the UCI regent scholarship is only $2500, less then the $6000 offered by UCSB.

Do you have any idea why the scholarship amounts are so different for these two schools? I’m guessing UCI gave out more scholarships so there is less money to divide to each student. :/

TO: Count* ndude* dian* and any others receiving Regents

Would you please post your stats (or those of your child) as well as the major?
Thanks.

So far it sounds as if those who received Regents did NOT get the Chancellor’s invitation until after they received Regents. So, if my child did receive a Chancellor’s invitation last week I think it’s safe to say he won’t be getting Regents. Please confirm/deny this pattern.

I think I answered my second question myself. On the “Received a letter in the mail from UCSB” thread Anotherlame* says her son received the Chancellor’s invitation last week and the Regents this week. So I guess there is still a tiny, tiny bit of hope.

I’m still interested in the stats though…

I’ve got an update. I received my regent’s scholarship yesterday, and just received the chancellor’s invitation in the mail today. Here are my stats:

Thanks ndude*. Your stats are much higher than those of my son. Congrats! Do you think you might actually attend UCSB?

I’m not sure as of now. It certainly is not my first choice. I’m still waiting on schools like Duke, Northwestern, UPenn, and UC Berkeley. I feel that this scholarship has bumped it significantly higher up my on my radar, though.

I’m actually surprised that I got this scholarship. I come from a very competitive high school, where I’m not even in the top 10% of my class. I bet a lot of kids from my school must of got it, or they really liked my essays and activities.

I’m sorry to hear your son hasn’t received anything yet, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Good luck!

Capped UC GPA: 4.4
Unweighted GPA: 4.0

Congrats! When did you receive your Regents letter?

My daughter recently received the Regents Scholarship in the mail; however, she hasn’t heard anything regarding the Chancellor Reception. Should we have some way to sign in on the UC websites regarding admission and/or financial aid status? We haven’t received any sign-in information from any of the UC’s, even though she’s been accepted at UCI & UCSB. Is there something we should be doing to get sign-in information? Thanks for any help!!

Congrats to those chosen as Regents Scholars.
