Regent Scholarship In!

My D just received notice that she won the Regent Scholarship.

Niceeeeee. What were her stats like? If I may ask.

She is not here now. I’ll have to ask her if she minds me posting when she gets back.

My daughter just got a Regents at UCSB also. So any ideas about which looks better for Medical School. Regents from UCSB or non-regents from UCLA? I’d love her to go to UCSB. It’s a great school and being a Regents Scholar would be great. What’s the best argument for convincing her?

^ You don’t argue, you just take her to visit the campus. Prettiest place ever.
Although, if she’s interested in medicine she might have more internship opportunities at UCLA.

I would strongly consider UCSB for premed over UCLA. The premed environment at UCLA is extremely competitive and I do not believe their med school admission rate is higher then UCSB. There are plenty of internship opportunities for premeds at UCSB in labs on campus at also at nearby Cottage Hospital. There is a mistaken notion that the UCs with attached medical schools are a better place for premeds. I do not think there is any objective evidence for this notion.

Congrats! I got it also. Does anyone know how many students are awarded this scholarship?

I think about 2% or 200 of the freshman class.

Yay! Congrats to everyone!

The scholarship sure makes UCSB more appealing. Does anyone know if travel grants are awarded for Spring Insight? Just wishful thinking, I guess… I’d love to go, but can’t afford the plane ride and the overnight stay.

The top two percent of admitted freshmen (about 22,000 are admitted, so 440 are in the top 2%) get a Regents scholarship, but out of that number, 200 actually attend UCSB. That’s an incredible yield.

Congrats!

My D did too. Nice surprise – we didn’t even know about it.

Decisions, decisions. Pretty hard to look beyond paradise plus a scholarship. Though I hate to part with her, I’ve thought she should broaden her horizons and go East. Now, I’m not so sure.

Don’t come out east, it’s cold and gray here everyday except the summer ;). Cali weather alone should keep her wanting to stay out west. I go to H.S in CT and can’t wait to get out! haha
