Has anyone started on their essay yet? I just tried following the directions on how to look up classes, but I'm stuck once I get to the class webpage. I can't find the link for "syllabus and class information." And I tried this for more than one class too... :-(

What classes are you looking for in general? I know the general link for chemistry courses are at:

http://voh.chem.ucla.edu/

You can either look at the class information for this quarter, winter 2005, or you can click on Previous voh pages and then an old quarter for old syllabi. Just click on a class, it'll bring you to their virtual office hour class page where you can find the syllabus for that class.

For math:

http://www.math.ucla.edu/classes/math/05w/

For some of the classes, you won't be able to do much other than see the textbooks required for the class. But for those that have a class page, just click on the class homepage link and there you should be able to find a syllabus.

Well, I'm not sure, but I think when I applied they gave instructions through www.registrar.ucla.edu and what you usually have to do is pick a subject and click on department url and explore from there. If you have any interest in mind, maybe I can help you find a syllabus, but so far I have only taken math and science courses so I might not be able to find them (maybe others could help). Good luck!

eh, maybe the humanities are just retarded at UCLA... or maybe I'm just incompetent

The Humanities Department, specifically English, is one of the best in the nation, not "retarded" as you claim.

you won't be able to see the syllabi for classes because you aren't enrolled in them. Only students enrolled in a class can log into that class site.

eh, well, actually the math and science courses do let you into their class websites w/ syllabi (-buses?), and so do some history ones, but...none of the English ones had their own websites. Although I did find their department website and they had some one paragraph descriptions of various classes, but I dunno if that will suffice.

Students who aren't enrolled should be able to see the syllabi...or why else would the regent committee tell you to go look it up?

all right you do bring up a good point. It depends on the type of website the class uses. It looks like most south campus classes have publicly accessible sites, except for homework and quiz areas. My philosophy classes (and more north campus classes I've taken) have used the ecampus sites, which require you to log in with your student id and SS# (however, it looks like you can e-mail someone to get guest access to these sites as well).

Why the hell do you need to see the syllabus to write an essay?

In order to write the essay for Regents nominees, they're told to look up a class they're interested in taking at Los Angeles and explain why, and they give crummy instructions in looking up class syllabi to get information about classes. Darkling, if you were able to find even just one paragraph description of classes, that should suffice, because the bulk of your essay anyway should be why you're interested in the topic matter. It'd be nice and helpful to see a full syllabus, but it isn't necessary- just focus more on the why this subject matter as a whole. Good luck!

hahaha suckers

:)

thanks a lot! That makes much more sense. I'm suprised that no one else who got their regent invitation is having the same problem...

Lol darkling, don't be surprised. You're not the only one! Most classes I looked at don't offer a syllabus. I thought I was missing something too.

Thanks for your post iyancy. So true.

hey darkling and _jc, yeah there is no syllabus and class information link-i just went to the registrar course info link to the right of the screen.

how r u guys writing your essays?? and we CAN fax them, right??

so how are the essays going?? i finished mine, but still wanna revise

Finished mine so far too. Syawn -email me if you'd like to swap for feedback. (math2000@msn.com)

ahh no but thanks _jc. im too embarrassed haha. i dont really like sharing, but i really appreciate the offer. what did u write about??

Lol, the first one I could find a syllabus on, so up there in Honors Analysis (seems when you get into honors classes they bother to post a syllabus). No kidding, but a class that sounds too cool. Reading all UCLA math has to offer made me want to be there more than anywhere else. Maybe that's the plan of Regents - the massive Regents conspiracy - kidding. Good luck on yours!

wow u really like math huh, as i can tell my your email?? whats the class u chose called exactly?
since i wanna major in chem e, i found a chem e class called "molecular biotechnology lecture: from gene to product." i learned about that in ap bio, so im really interested.

how is your essay written?? mine's pretty plain (i always write plain essays, but at least they're concise)

wait,wait,wait....dont they announce regent finalists in late march???

thats what I thought...

I don't think this question's been answered - can we fax them : )? thanks.
