Regents at SD vs LA

Hey guys,

So I know that this is the SD board so it might be a little biased, but I need help making a decision.

I got Regents at SD, but not at LA, so it would be like 8,000/year cheaper for me to go to SD. However, I visited both campuses, and I really, really love LA.

Do you think that I should just come to SD because of the financial aid?
I'm planning to major in Chem and then go on to medical school, so I think that I can pay off my debt easier if and when I become a doctor (yeah, i know it's not a guarantee, but fingers crossed)

I know that 8,000 is a lot of money, but then I feel like I would have a happier and better undergraduate experience at LA.

I'm in Revelle, if it matters.

Bernice is that you?? xD

Go to LA! It is most important to go to the university that fits you. Good luck!

asianamy: uh…no O.O

ucsandiego915: thanks for the unbiased response!

I’m worried about taking out too many loans! San Diego seems to have so many benefits, but happiness is important? =/

Concerning UCLA vs. UCSD, UCLA has better chacne at giving you an edge. Plus its food is ranked #1 this year, it BEAT Cornell!

If you do workstudy and a bit of summer job, the first year should cost near nothing along with FA.

Choosing between UCSD and UCLA is very hard, but since you love UCLA campus, thats where you belong.

Happiness > money issue (if it’s not a big difference ie: 10k+)

I would definitely choose LA.

If you love the campus, then go there becuase you’d rather be in a place you love for four years rather than at a school just becuase they offered you more money.

Besides, you can apply for scholarships to pay off the remaining money at UCLA

That what I did for UCSD and now I’m fully paid

Academics-wise UCLA isn’t worth $32K more than UCSD IMO. UCSD actually ranks higher than UCLA in some areas and in most areas they’re very close.

So the question is really - Is what you like at UCLA vs UCSD worth $32K especially if you think there’s a strong possibility you’ll be going on to expensive med school with a lot more expense ahead of you? Maybe it is for you but maybe not. For some families $32K is a lot of money and for others not much so financial resources enters the equation of ‘value’.

Think through what it is about UCLA that you really, really prefer over UCSD and why you think you’d be so much happier there. Once you put those feelings into tangibles then you can value them to see if you think it’s really worth it.

I agree completely with the post above (: ^ ^ ^

But I think you should choose UCLA, since you seemed to like it more.

Good luck with your decision!

What do you mean $8000 difference?

because if it’s only $8000 out of like $32k for LA, i would definitely choose LA.

It’s actually 8000 on top of my EFC every year. But I’m hoping to make up for some money by applying to scholarships after my freshmen year since it’s kind of too late now…

Well throughout your Freshmen year you can apply and as you are awarded the scholarships you can notify the financial aid office.

That is what my sisters did at UCLA and they were able to use the scholarships that same year.

If you can be awarded scholarship money that you might apply for after you start (which isn’t anything you can actually count on getting), you could do that at UCSD as well so the difference in cost between the two remains the same.

Haha well the way I see it, if I go to SD, then I wouldn’t really be looking into other scholarships because the regents covers everything up to my family’s efc. so hard. this is like personal happiness vs. money. :(

what ucsducladad is saying is you can get extra pocket money if you apply to ucsd, too. place it into a 3 or 5 year t-note/t-bond and accrue some interest before med school.

go to la bro. Like ChristianWu said, Hapiness>Money and i totally agree with that.
