how prestigious is this scholarship? I will be an MCB major. How many MCBs are Regents? Is it something special or is it something that is very easily dismissed after the first year or so? Will it come in helpful when applying to Medical School, like do Med schools even know about it and its prestige (if any at all)?

bump!! someone please help!!

Okay, well keep in mind that I’m only a recently admitted student, but our class valedictorian this year was the only one in school history to be nominated for it. I mean, it’s not like being named a Rhodes Scholar, but it obviously carries some weight, and you’ll get attention when you need it, which otherwise might be hard to come by at Cal.

Only 1,000 kids out of 44,000 applicants are invited to interview for it. So prestige-wise, you tell me. ;)

As for med-school, whether they know what it is or not will depend on how familiar they are with Cal. However, “Regents Scholar-UC Berkeley” can NEVER look bad on a med-school app. Usually, you can explain what it is at the bottom of the app or something too. IMO, it can only help you.

Hope I helped!!! good luck!

well numbers wise i can also do the math and feel special…i mean i actually was awarded the scholarship which only 200 people get..so percentage wise okay..
but realistically, does this carry any weight throughout college years and especially when applying to medical school? i hope some senior student can better clarify this

can someone explain what regents is though?

Regents really won’t help you as far as med school is concerned, as it isn’t something awarded based on your college work, it is based on your high school work (and all you have to do to maintain it is get a 3.0 gpa).

Few med schools will place much weight on your high school achievements.

That being said, it does carry a significant amount of prestige within the university as well as tangible benefits. You get guaranteed housing for 4 years, $4000 ($1000 each year), and a faculty sponsor. It’s a pretty sweet deal, and people will definitely respect you greatly for it, but when it comes to grad school, most schools won’t care about it.

so i guess its pretty much worthless…i mean the money is insignificant, i will move into an apartment after frosh year, and i guess the faculty sponsor…well i dont even know what that means

Worthless isn’t really the term to use. It’s just that graduate schools as a whole don’t tend to care about things you did 5-8 years ago.

The national merit scholarship is similar. Colleges don’t see any results beyond semifinalist, so winning the scholarship makes no difference in your admissions. Graduate schools don’t really care about it because it is based on something you did in your junior year. Yet it is still quite prestigious and very respectable.

Not everything in life is about getting into med school. I would give a lot for that scholarship.

Oh yeah, here’s the url to their website, in case you wanted to look up the scholarship (and find out what a faculty sponsor is):
[Scholarships Prizes Honors](http://students.berkeley.edu/fao/scholarships/RCSscholars.html)

Regent’s, at this point, offers limited benefits, if you don’t have financial need. The housing used to be a big deal, when dorm space was so limited, but Berkeley has built new dorms and the overall housing shortage in the city has eased a bit. It won’t matter for grad school at all, frankly.

hmmm…okay…it still seems pretty ordinary…
anyways…how many MCBs are Regents/Chancellors Scholars? I know there are only 200 total per class, but how many typically per major? any idea?

Is it hard to maintain a 3.0 in engineering in order to meet the scholarship requirements?

Hard? Yes, meaning you’ll have to work hard probably to earn solid grades. Unreasonably hard? Probably not.
