Regents Scholar UC SD/I vs. UCLA

Hey all,

I need some help in deciding which college to go to. My EFC is about 13,500. If I go to UCSD or UCI, I would be expected to pay my EFC, where I would take out 5,500 in student loans and my parents would take out the remaining amount.

However, if I go to UCLA, I only have a 4,000 scholarship, so I would be expected to pay about 22k. (Is there a way that I can ask for some work study? ): ) I really, really want to go to UCLA because once I stepped foot on campus, it just felt so right and I loved everything about it. I know there are some perks for being a regents scholar at san diego and irvine, but i'd much rather go to ucla.

What would you guys suggest? Would it be too much to take out that many loans? Also, my brother is planning to go to graduate school in about two years... and I, myself, am also planning to go to graduate school. But still, I would really love to go to UCLA for my undergraduate.

Please help!

Did you submit the FAFSA to UCLA? The COA at UCLA is about $26,000, so if your EFC is $13,500 and a $4,000 scholarship you should still be eligible for Stafford subsidized loans of $3,500, unsubs of $2,000 and work/study. Call the financial aid office and ask if they received your FAFSA.

Hey alamemom,

Thanks for answering. :)

I did submit the FAFSA. I did qualify for the loans, but my parents are hesitant about me taking out loans because they don’t want it to follow me for the rest of my life.

But as of now, the financial aid package offered to me includes the loans you mentioned, but I don’t have work study. Should I still contact the financial aid office and ask them?

Because they are offering 16k loans for my parents, but our efc is 13,500, so should I see if they can work in a work study into my financial aid package?

bumppp! I need help in making this decision. Please give me your advice! (:
