Regents Scholarship @UCSC vs Regular Admission @ UCD

What would you choose? Its the same major. Does Regents scholarship trumps a better UC?

It depends. How much money would she be getting in scholarships? Does that make a difference to you financially? What other benefits are there to the UCSC Regents scholarship? What does your child want to do after college?

My D chose a Regents Scholarship at UCSD over UC Berkeley and UCLA. She got to enroll in classes before the other students so there was never a full but required class for her. She got special library privileges and yes, she got a nice scholarship also. She also got access to research projects she would not have otherwise gotten. She is now in medical school.

Has she visited both campuses? While lots of people love the vibe at UCSC, others prefer a more urban setting. And UCSC does make UCD look urban!

I think with a school such as UCSC, “fit” is an important consideration.

what major?

@bluebayou‌ : Major is CS.

@TatinG : its 20K over 4 years. As a parent, I don’t mind spending 20K more. I am not sure about the other benefits.
(housing, enrollment priority). Regarding after college, going to be a job. There could be graduate school etc. Can’t really say now.

@katliamom : She has visited both campuses. She likes UCSC campus. However, we all have heard about the reputation of schools and it seems we have been brainwashed to believe that UCD is in top 3 UC and UCSC is in bottom 3.
I Don’t want to influence the decision. Just want to make sure we don’t repent later if 4 year studies turn into 5 years.

I hear you, parentnil95. It’s tough to fight against perception. Is there a way to compare internship/career opportunities for the two schools? Does UCSC’s relative proximity to the Silicon Valley count as an advantage? Or, is this a case that with CS as a major it’s probably safe-- opportunities wise – to go with either school?
