REGENTS SCHOLARSHIP

@aks2014 are u an international applicant to Berkeley?

@nimble09 Yup

Did u receive the leadership invite?

@aks2014 did u receive the Berkeley leadership award invite ?

Yeah! Wbu?
But I don’t really think that matters… Waiting for regents if it is sent to international applicants at this time …

Congratulations to all who got the invitation to the regents interview!
I haven’t heard anyone getting the e-mail from our school [North California] yet.

For those of you wondering if you got the invitation but didn’t get any email, you can log in to your application tracking. If there’s a notice at the bottom that says you got it, then you got it, if not, you didn’t.

Yes, frosh admission to Berkeley includes admission to the major or division you applied to. For the College of Engineering, that means that you are in the specific major. For the College of Letters and Science, that means that you are undeclared, like all frosh entering the College of Letters and Science.

Accepted!

Daughter in the North Bay got the email yesterday evening. Nice to be admitted and considered for the scholarship, but she’s not that interested having been accepted EA to UChicago. Still waiting to hear from H and Y, but otherwise she’d go to Chicago over UCB. I just logged on to this thread to see what it was all about.

I’m looking forward to this. I’ll probably go for an early interview then go on a tour and stay the night. Also, free food!

@aks2014 no regents invite…:(

I hear the food is amazing at the reception haha I’ve been to Berkeley so many times though that the overnight stay would probably not benefit me much.

Is regents invite related to chosen major, or independent of it? Wondering if there is a quota per major, for example. Any idea?

Did the regents invite recipients also got an invite for “leadership award”? Aka, was regents and leadership invites independent of each other?

Wondering same thing as tinnova, did you guys who got regents apply for the most “competitive” majors like bioengineering? Congrats to all who achieved this honor!!

@bob1235 - yes, I got regents and applied for BioE.

My surprise data point is that high GPA (Non-Wgtd: 3.96, UC: 4.2, Weighted: 4.96) and 2330 SAT did not get the invite for an intended EECS major and candidates with lower GPA and lower SAT got the invite. I heard UCs are race-neutral and numbers driven. Not sure if there are other factors like choice of major or geographic quota that come into play.

UCB, UCLA, and UCSD all claim to do “holistic” admissions now. I believe that UCB (and probably all of the UCs) gives “hardship” points to students with Significant Obstacles as shown in the 2005 Hout report below, which might help to explain how students with lower stats get selected for both admission and/or scholarships. This report also showed that there were 9% of the applicants during the 2003 year with perfect 4.0 unweighted GPAs. And, of course, none of us see all of the ECs, essays, and letters of rec that applicants bring to the table.

“Examples of obstacles that may be significant include:
*Homelessness
*Environment discouraged educational aspirations or participation in extracurriculars
*Neglect or mistreatment by family member
*Lives in dangerous neighborhood
*Sibling caretaker
*Home not suitable for homework (crowded or chaotic)
*Commutes more than an hour to school
*Has lived apart from parents
*Foster home
*Divorce or separation
*Death
*Incarceration
*Disruptive and frequent moves (multiple schools, homes, etc)
*Low-income family in high income school
*Contributes to family income
*Must work for free in family business
*Student must help parents (e.g., as translator, conducts business, pays bills, etc.)
*Parents have low English proficiency
*Home language not English
*Prior schooling not in English
*Comes from a culture with no written language
*Low-level or no experience with institutionalized education
*Victim of discrimination
*Stressful immigration experience
*Serious or chronic illness or injury
*Physical Disability
*Learning Disability
*Pregnancy
*Coming out
*Victim of violence”

Got regents as Operations Research major , the one in college of l & s
