My son is in 8th grade and is in honors math and science. However, he is struggling to keep up with the content. We do
not plan to put him in honors math and science next year. Since he is in honors, he will be taking the Regents exam in June. I do not feel he is ready and he would benefit from taking it in another grade. Do I have any options for him to NOT take the Regents this year??
That’s between you and the school district.
NY wants the exams in before graduation. I don’t think they care when he takes them.
BUT… if he’s taking the Algebra I Regents, his best shot at passing it is right after finishing the Algebra I course; likewise with whatever science he’s taking.
Waiting a year to take the exam means he’s very likely to forget all that content.
It’s not like an SAT; it’s very course specific.
What does his guidance counselor say???
You are going to need to talk to the school. At ours, I’ve known kids who did not take the regents exam in June and just repeated the math and science classes along with their on grade peers in HS, taking the exam after that
Yeah, she’s hard to get a hold of…
Talk to the school about it
Who is “she”? Math teacher? Guidance counselor? Principal? If you are having trouble, email all and CC them. Tell them you would like to discuss your son’s options for next year as you don’t feel he has adequately learned enough for these classes and should reoeat them, ask that he not be required to take these regents exams at this time. See what the rsponse is and go from there.
What do you think?
Middle school students can take the math regents in lieu of the state exam in math (to keep from over testing).
Since the state exams are this week, will you be opting your child out of the state math exam along with the regents. This is a conversation that you need to go to school tomorrow and discuss with your GC.
Students are automatically programmed for the regents because Algebra culminates in the regents. You need to check to syllabus to see if the regents exam is going to be factored into his final grade,
The one thing to keep in mind is if your son does not take and pass the regents in 8th grade, he will have to retake Algebra in high school in 9th grade. How will you and he feel about that?
The only way that he can get credit for an accelerated course in middle school is by passing the regents.
The worse case scenario is that if he takes it and passes it now, he will get the high school credit. He will always have to option of retaking for a higher grade (if your school does an august exam, I would recommend that since he will not be far from the content) whether it is a minimum of 70 for college readiness or a minimum of 85 for mastery. At most high schools now only the highest grade will show up on his transcript.
If he is doing well in the course, his 8th grade from the class will be part of his high school record and averaged into his overall high school gpa.
If he needs review for math, I would recommend that you use JMAP at
start with resources by topic AL (algebra) it will show you everything that is covered along with the state standard. You can click on a topic you will find lesson plans, worksheets and videos that he can use to practice (questions are from actual regents exams).

example of the content on linear equations: The videos are amazing!!

I would also recommend using Regents Books There will be regents questions from the past 5 years (up to the January 2018 exam) Click on the standard by topic.
You can also use the study guide to help him review questions

hope this helps
Also, the city of Oswego has a phenomenal Regents Prep center online! Here it is: https://www.quia.com/files/quia/users/christinebell/Regents-Prep-Center.htm
^^^ Ooops, just checked. For some reason, they removed the “phenomenal” aspects of that site!!! So sorry!
They never updated the Oswego site when the curriculum changed.
You do not have to have your child take the state standardized tests for math and science, even if he does not take the regents. You can opt him out if you choose. This week’s exam is the ELA anyway.
Some schools do show every Regents exam
grade on transcripts. My kids’ school does. They don’t show the course grade from the middle school courses which aren’t averaged into high school GPA, but they do show those regents exam grades. Those regents exam grades need to be 85+ for mastery IIRC and average over 90 for some of the honors designations.
Again, all this is why you need the info from your son’s school. It’s not done the same everywhere.
Depending on what system your school system uses to generate transcripts -at the NYC DOE, they use STARS, where only the highest regents grades are displayed. You have to manually go in to change the setting to show all scores (which you need to do in order to appeal).
I am certain that what ever school system you are in, they can change their settings to show only the max regents grade (it may be a policy in your school or district to show all regents grades).
Honors designation only has to be an average of 90+ in the regents used for getting the diploma (Regents, advanced regents, advanced regents with mastery).
I’m NY but not NYC, that’s probably why my kids’ school does the transcript differently than the NYC area schools. The OP didn’t say which part of NY.
My kids 8th grade Regents test scores were on their high school diplomas. They didn’t retake, so I don’t know if both scores would have been listed if they had. I don’t think there would be any negative fallout from a low score in 8th grade being followed by a much better score in 9th grade. There are many kids who find algebra hard to get a hang of, but then go on to succeed in math. My younger kid’s 8th grade scores were noticabley lower than any of the Regents scores from his high school years, but they were pretty good. They took so many practice tests in class everyone had a pretty good idea how they would do in the actual exam.
