My D got the regents packet today. I was so happy for her. I didn't realize the perks that go with it too, like getting to register for classes first. She said, "you mean I won't get stuck with an 8am class?" That's right...

Does anyone know what the makeup of the financial package might be? Loans? Or do you think getting the Regents might mean there's no loans? I know it's kind of wishful thinking, but I've got to ask it...

Freshmen
All freshmen admitted for the fall quarter at UCSB are considered for the Regents Scholarship, based on their UC Application for Admission. No additional information is required. UCSB typically offers the scholarship to students within the top two percent of admitted freshmen. Students are notified by U.S. Mail in early March if they have been selected.

Decisions of the Regents Scholarship Committee are final. Appeals are not accepted.

Program Benefits

In addition to the monetary award, Regents Scholars receive:

* Priority registration beginning winter quarter of the first year
Guaranteed housing in a university-owned residence hall for the duration of Regents Scholarship
Enrollment in college honors programs
Extended borrowing privileges at UC Santa Barbara's Davidson Library to accommodate research needs
Membership in UCSB's Regents and Chancellor's Scholars Association (RCSA)

The Regents and Chancellor's Scholars Association (RCSA) provides:

* Academic and social programming;
Opportunities for leadership, networking, faculty interaction and community service.

JW Muller, what do you mean by "feeble?" Do you mean he didn't do any research on a cure for cancer or launch a non-profit to end world hunger?

I don't care how they choose it, I'm just happy she got the offer. She's worked hard and it's nice to see some recognition during the waiting process. The Regents Scholarship certainly does hold sway in her decision of where to attend. UCDavis accepted her last month, but they didn't offer her a Regents.

The letter says something along the lines of: anything other than your ELC will be covered by grants and scholarships. So if your ELC is high, you'll have to take out loans. For example, my EFC is about 15,000. Since it costs about 26,000 to attend, I have a need of 11,000: 6,000 will be covered by the Regents scholarship and the other 5,000 will be covered by other scholarships/grants.

For acceptance, I had little extracurriculars (tutor, sport, peer counselor, <20 hours of community service), but I am ELC (4.4 GPA) with ok test scoes (2080 SAT, 790/730 SAT II) so I think mainly GPA factored into my Regents scholarship.

I received the Regents letter for UCSB a couple of days ago.

UC GPA: 4.6
SAT: 2330
ELC
I don't really feel like re-posting my extracurriculars -- feel free to comb back through my past posts, though.

At this point, I'm not sure where I'm going to end up attending for undergrad -- it's definitely helpful, though, that I have at least one backup (accompanied by a guaranteed $6,000 per year scholarship, no less).

Does receiving this Regents indicate anything about chances of admission at other UCs?
If I'm "top 4%" of UCSB applicants, where am I for the other schools?

got notification of Regents scholarship last week.
UC GPA: 4.1
ACT: 33
extensive extracurriculars in speech and sports.
It was an unexpected surprise-- a good surprise. still hoping for UCLA. Any feedback--- better to go to UCLA as a "regular" student or go to UCSB as a regents scholar?

2stargirls: I was wondering the same thing. If money is important, then I'd pick UCSB. It takes the average UCLA student 5.5 to 6 years to graduate. That's a lot of money. For me, my ELC is high yet we can't afford college. Right now, UCSB is at the top of my list. I, too, never expected to get Regents but was pleasantly surprised.

So, I’m wondering, out of everyone that got accepted to UCSB as a Regents Scholar, who is officially attending? If not, what school did you turn the scholarship down for?

2stargirls: My daughter and I are considering the same question. She was called personally to apply for an Alumni Scholarship at UCLA, so I assume that means she’s a likely candidate for admission (and maybe for the scholarship).

So we are debating: UCLA (regular) versus (UCSB Regents). I like the preferential class sign-up. I’m also considering that UCSB may not be so cutthroat as UCLA. Daughter wants to go to med school after getting a biology degree.

Also, has Davis already sent out the Regents information?

Are there other grants or scholarships that Regents are more likely to get?

Anybody know anything about those other scholarships that we checked off boxes for on the application? Descendant of Civil War veteran. Woman interested in the sciences. Etc. etc.

My D got the Regents package and at the LAX reception yesterday we asked the person manning the Regents table if there were regents or scholar floors at certain dorms like Anacapa, and he said no.

If you go to the UCSB web-site, they say they have scholar or honors floors in Anacapa, San Nicholas, Manz, etc. However, the man said that scholars floors change dorms every year, so I don’t really understand the discrepancy. D was picturing having guaranteed housing on a scholars floor like in Anacapa every year.
