Regional Advantage In Admissions?

Awwww, duuuuuude, awwww.

What if I am NOT an overachieving Asian American? Surely that should distinguish me from the rest, no? Will this give me an edge?

EDIT: to feemzi, I hope you do know I was just kidding. I myself copy/pasted the same question I asked earlier too right after I commented about you to be funny, ha-ha?

i.e. - comming from oklahoma will not save a sub-par SAT score, rank, or a less than pristine essay.

I did some research on this. Apparently, approx. 1/50 Asian Americans are Pakistani. So, approx. 0.1% of the American population is Pakistani. That means Cornell would need approx. 3 Pakistani’s to ensure proper representation. Good luck!

Geez, gametheory, stop being so self-centered!

You should be concerned for those of us who have no cultural advantages. I’m a white male applying from NY. My familiy makes too much money, and I’m an only child. Do you hear me complaining? No siree!

kk. But if one posses an average SAT score, good rank, and good essay, being from oklahoma would provide a small advantage?

I Hate You!!! Grrrrrr! You Meany!

Edit: Please not that the above message was for spiritus; that will be all, thank you.

being from a state like Ok. and having “average scores” won’t make much of a difference. It’s not a pull factor, rather a “plus” when you have superior scores (i.e. a 2350, 4.0 from Ok. stands a better shot at an identical app. from NY)

I’m sensing some hostility from you, Gametheory.

I only have one more thing to say and that is we’re all American no matter what our skin colors are or where we’re from.

Ezra Cornell said, “I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study.” Emphasis on the ANY. So Gametheory and Feemzi2, I think that despite our geographic similarities and differences, we have equal chances of getting in because Ezra Cornell would not discriminate based on color, race, or hometowns.

i understand

^What bullcrap, you made me puke! Why didn’t someone tell me this guy was crazy! I mean the nerve, to go all mushy gushy, softy tushy on me! Sheesh.

Okay, back to my question. What if I am a relatively underachieving Asian-American, doesn’t that set me apart from the rest?

Edit: Note that the first two lines were directed at spiritus and all others may carry on, that is all, thank you.

“What if I am a relatively underachieving Asian-American, doesn’t that set me apart from the rest?”

Yes. But, you can see how that might not be so desirable to Cornell…

Cornell still hasnt updated my teacher rec’s as recieved, is this bad?

if they were really missing something, they’d contact you.

Stop being so self-centered Feemzi2, I’m trying to have a conversation here!

Okay, so what if I am a MIDDLE-CLASS, under achieving, Pakistani/Bangladeshi-American from New York? Does that give me a slight edge?

Now, now, gametheory, what I said before was said with heart felt sincerity.

Goodness man! I’m getting sick!!! You belong in the world of Narnia!!! Where’s my ecstasy?!

Being of Asian origin is inconsequential. Up until recently, it likely worked against you. After athletes, legacies, URM’s and development admits, being from an under-represented state is probably the most important datum. An olympic quality or all-state African-American athlete whose parents and grandparents all went to Cornell, who comes from North Dakota where each parent is a senior officer in some large agribusiness concern that has funded a major new campus building, is close to your ideal candidate. Of course, if she has also written a symphony it would help…especially if it were adopted as the Ugandan national anthem…

being asian is the worst thing when it comes to admission, asians have lower chances at everything cuz theres so many of us..

“being asian is the worst thing when it comes to admission, asians have lower chances at everything cuz theres so many of us..”

but there are even more whites. so, are you saying that being white works against one in admissions? listen to what you’re saying. now do you truly believe this?

a good “goal” for admissions is to have the class makeup mimic that of the US population. In other words, if 10% of the US pop is Hispanic, a school should aim for 10% representation in their student body (I just made up the 10%).

The asian population in the US is 5%, while at Cornell it is 15%.
