The school is a 5 hour drive but they are having regional auditions which are of course taped and sent to the professors. Which is best? This is for voice but probably applicable for all instruments.

Make the drive, it’s worth the investment and would be a false economy not to do so. It’s always better to audition in person if at all possible and that’s even more important for singers because so much of what they do is colored by personality and presentation.
Five hours away isn’t bad at all, but I’d suggest getting there the day before and staying over so that your D has a good night’s sleep and is able to be rested and warmed up before her audition.

I strongly agree - definitely make the drive if it is school your child is serious about. It makes a better impression on them and it’s invaluable for your child to get a feel for the teachers, students and environment.

Agree, if at all possible go to the love audition. You can’t beat the interaction and the feel they will get for the place. However, it is not impossible to be accepted from a regional audition, or they would not do them so do not feel bad if you just can’t do it.

My daughter had an hour lesson with a professor at a college that is 5 hours away. When we asked about a regional audition, the professor told us that it would be absolutely fine, since they had had the time to talk, and she had heard my daughter play. I know of someone else who had done the same thing the previous year at the same college (lesson, then regional audition). They were accepted to the school, and that’s where he ultimately decided to go.
