tokenadult - How can you tell if schools track interest by visits? Just curious if you have asked directly or if you have gleaned this through their website, etc.

I just spent a week trying to visit 6 schools across 700 miles with my son but saw only 4 due to logistics (distance, timing of tours/info sessions especially). This was disappointing since I had taken days off from work and am not sure how many more I can take! Another Mom at work told me her son got into all the schools he applied to without ever visiting one (he visited later). We are in the Boston area so local to many schools. One would think the adofficers would expect a local student to at least visit?

Thanks for this great list, I have written down a few that we did not have on our list. September and October are going to be much too busy!

Some colleges indicate that in their Common Data Set filings. I hope everyone here has seen the GREAT compilation of Web postings of Common Data Set filings put together by another CC participant.

That's a good thread to visit to gather information from before attending college information sessions in person.

Other than that, sometimes CC participants have heard the reputation of different colleges as to whether they regard demonstrated interest in the college as an admission factor. I'll have a talk with my oldest son this evening about his college plans, and it looks like his "safety" doesn't care at all, nor do some of his "reach" colleges in consideration at the moment, but one or two really interesting, debatably "match" colleges for him appear to regard applicant interest pretty highly, in which case we will have to attend their information sessions here and think ahead about visiting the campuses.

P.S. Yeah, I hear you about "September and October are going to be much too busy!" I have been compiling a Minnesota-specific list of college visits arranged by date for my local friends, and I see that 8 October 2007 has a HUGE pile-up of college visits on the same evening. My son will want to attend AT LEAST two of those.

The Duke University page about evening programs

confusingly still has old dates on it, but the state-by-state links lead to current information for fall 2007.

Here's a tip for any parents/students living outside the US: check with some of the larger international schools within travelling distance to see if they have a college fair scheduled. Last year my daughter happened to email an admissions rep with a question about her application, and the rep wrote back, answered the question, and also mentioned that she would be in Germany the following week for an event at Frankfurt International School. D contacted FIS for details and went alone by train (about 3.5 hours), had an interview and lunch with the rep of the school she was must interested in (Dickinson--just finished her first week of class and loves it!) and also visited the rest of the booths. In fact, Connecticut College, which ended up #2 on D's list by the time acceptances came in, was there also, and it was not even on her radar before the fair. I believe that was around the first part of November, so it is time to start checking with some of those schools.
