Hi,

Haven't written here in a while! Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone had details about purchasing a parking permit and just generally how to deal with having a car on campus. I'm a rising sophomore and I haven't heard anything about this via email or usps yet... Additionally, the website seems a bit outdated. Any input?

For sophomores, you only qualify for the “G-level” parking permits. Those are on a first-come, first-serve basis and generally sell out within a few hours of becoming available. They were available immediately after the 4th of July, so you might want to look at parking elsewhere. I used to pay $75 a month my freshman year to park at the top of the 25/25 garage (by SAE).

They should send a letter (snail mail) or email about this, but according to the traffic and parking website, they don’t go on sale until August 1. You can also click Permits/Purchase Permits, log in with your VunetID, and it should give you a list of all permit types and under most of them it should say “This permit will not be available until 08/01/2011.” Double-check to see it says that under G permit also, which is sophomore parking (I don’t have that one on my page, because I’m a graduate student and not “eligible” to buy a G or F).

Last year when my son was a rising sophomore, he logged in using his VU Net ID and password at 9:00 a.m. (Nashville time, CDST) August 1, 2010, and secured a spot in Kensington Garage for $900, which I paid in October. He got an email notification that day that gave him a direct link to the registration site, [Traffic and Parking | Vanderbilt University](Parking Services | Vanderbilt University), and told him what he needed: license plate number, state where registered, make, model, year, and color of vehicle to be registered. I’m sure many students will be sitting on double dead ready at 9 a.m.!
I just put “parking permit” in the search box at vanderbilt.edu and read “Student registration begins August 1 at 9:00 a.m. followed by staff and faculty registration on August 8.” I hope that’s up-to-date info and not from last year.
In 2009 the notification came July 27 and students registered the same day.

My D got on the website in time sophomore year, only to find that transfer credit had not completed her evaluation yet … meaning she was not technically a sophomore & so could not get a parking pass. She got on the waitlist & was able to get a pass part way through second semester (prorated cost). She used a Zipcar while car-less, which was better than nothing. So, if you don’t get a pass, get on the waitlist, cross your fingers, and hope for the best! :)
