Registering for Classes- CLOSED!?

Hello everyone, I am an incoming freshman and have not yet attended orientation. I was browsing the registration portal last night, and noticed that lots of courses, GEs and beginning major courses, are labeled as "closed." Does this mean that these courses are full? If so, are they supposed to open up courses at each session for EVERY class? I read that they only . open up core classes, not necessarily major specific classes. Can anybody comment on this process and what happens if courses are closed? The intro course to my major is closed, and I wonder how I will be able to pursue it if the opening course is full.

it seems as if students who attend later orientation sessions are getting screwed...but perhaps I am wrong?

thanks for the help. The insight of freshman who have already attended orientation is particularly appreciated.

From my experience, they do not open up space in every class. For ge categories 1 or 2 they did not open up more spots in the classes that were already full. They might have opened classes in other ge categories, but I wouldn’t know cuz I didn’t have to take any of those. As for the intro course to your major, it seems that if you need that course they will have to find a way to get you into it.

I went last week and a lot was full. So at least as far as GEs go, you’re kinda screwed (rather, all the interesting-sounding ones are taken). I heard that they reserve a certain number of slots per orientation session though, so you’re probably safe as far as major requirements.

I would call your advisor and get help going through the maze of it all.

Kind of.

If the number of spaces in the class is equal to the number registered, then yes, the class is full.

However, if the number registered is smaller than the amount of spaces in the class, then at your orientation spots in the class are opened up. Registration is “closed” for high demand classes to ensure entering freshman get the courses they need.

Your advisor will guide you through this process at orientation. If your major intro class is full, are you sure you’re looking at all the sections offered? If it is indeed filled to capacity, take all the GEs and other intro classes you can in the fall and take the one in question in the spring. Shouldn’t be a big deal.
