Registering For Classes

Hi :)

I'm an incoming freshman to the College of Arts & Sciences and I know that the only ways to register early for classes are through the ArtSci weekends and FSAP. I couldn't attend any of those and according to the first year webpage, 'Students unable to attend one of the summer programs will register during Orientation in August'. The questions I have are: isn't that waaaay too late? How do you get the time to get your necessary books if you can only register during Orientation? Also, does that mean that you probably won't get into any of the classes you want?

I'm so confused and reeeeeally nervous about not getting into any of the classes I want so thank you so much in advance!

You’ll probably get into all the classes you want, at least as long as they’re intro-level courses that many students take. For example, you won’t be unable to take a class like Gen Chem but you probably wouldn’t get some obscure literature class with only enough room for 10 people. You’ll be able to get your books from the newly-renovated bookstore, although that will be pretty expensive. You should know what intro-level classes you want to take (like calculus or chemistry) and buy those books in advance because you’ll definitely take them this semester if it’s standard for your course of study.

Oh that’s a relief to hear  Thanks for your help! Right now, I really only have a faint idea of what major I wish to pursue so would you say that I would have a much higher chance of getting into the big classes with 200+ students and therefore, get the books for those classes?

Calc, Gen Chem, Psych, etc - you WILL get into those kind of classes.

You might, however, have to deal with a crappy time slot (I had an 8am calc recitation freshman year even though I registered in July as an engineer…).

So yeah, feel free to go ahead and buy books for those classes.

If you aren’t taking science, math, etc. it may suck slightly.
Books you can get from bookstore or from Amazon…but keep in mind the South 40 mailroom gets a backlog of over a week during first week of class, so even if your books arrive you’ll have to wait a while. May have to borrow for assignments, etc.
