Registration of classes

When do freshmen usually start to register for classes?

My friend is an international student and is therefore among the last few to reach UIUC. He is complaining that a lot of the classes were already full when he reached UIUC, so his study plan is screwed up. I hope to avoid this problem. Thanks.

If you are an incoming freshman and have not registered yet, then you will have the same problem -- many classes you want are likely closed and you will likely be spending the first week of school trying to drop and add.

If you are looking at entering next year, then the annual process for new freshman is that, after you have accepted admission, you sign up for and attend one of several two day orientation sessions at UIUC with the first usually beginning early June (and the rest occur in the summer thereafter) and you register for classes at the end of that session. Thus, the earlier the orientation session you get into the more chance you have to get classes you want.

I will most probably enter UIUC next year.

Being an international student, I am not sure if I can go to UIUC during early June just to register for classes. Do I have to be physically in UIUC to register for classes? Can I register online instead?

Thanks.

You can register online, but I'm not sure if you have to have a registration date. When I went, all the classes I wanted were taken. Nothin you can do about that until 2nd semester and just beat all the upperclassmen. But anyways, after I picked all my classes my advisor told me I was stuck with them until move-in (19). So you can do it online but, I dont know if you still need to go to registration.

it's pretty much a nightmare thus far. i spent an hour thursday, two hours friday, and an hour again yesterday trying to find 6 more credits for my schedule. Your college, if they are nice like mine was, will save you a spot in classes you need to take.

just check the enterprsie web site every now and then and you'll see open spots pop up at times.

Blink182: Didn't you manage to register your classes online before you moved in?

krbarrett77: If your college has already reserved a place for you in the classe that you want, why are you still looking for 6 more hours of credit??

Thanks! (:

edwinks, the answer is no, you cannot just register during June or July without attending one of the orientation sessions. This is a problem faced by international students, many of whom end up with a registration date in August close to the start of school and many classes are filled by then. The result is that they sign up for what they can get and then try to make changes during the first week of class through drop and add.

If such a situation is a perplexing problem faced by most, if not all, international students, I wonder why there is still no solution proposed by the admissions office.

So as of now, the only solution is to fly over to UIUC to attend one of the orientation sessions just to register for classes?

Thanks.

No, I was unable to register before I went to orientation, and after that I only had like 12 hours after that I think. Ya their system sucks but I bet that's universal. Just do what you can till 2nd semester.

Okay thanks. Looks like I have to fly over to UIUC during June or July just to register for classes.

"edwinks, the answer is no, you cannot just register during June or July without attending one of the orientation sessions."

i did. my advisor just signed me up for 14 creds then we talked on the phone about what other classes i wanted her to add/drop.

Hmm do you happen to be an international student?

Do you mean that I can make an overseas call to my advisor to register for classes on my behalf in June/July?

im from california, so yeah sure im international ;)

im in the institute of aviation so maybe its different for us because they have to reserve a plane for me early and they want to make sure im able to graduate in 4 years cause im in an extra pilot program along with air force rotc.
