I am junior with some AP classes (9th-2AP, 10th-3AP, 11th-4AP in progress, 12th-4AP plan). I know CalTech doesnt give you any credits, but does it give you any priority with registration?

What is the registration policy? (How to register for classes)

Registration is open to everyone at 8 am on the given day. No one’s given priority, but that doesn’t really matter because you can always get into the classes required for your major. The only classes that fill up quickly are some humanities and afternoon lab sections.

This is one of the huge advantages of Caltech over larger schools - you really do not have to worry about getting the classes you need or fitting in your requirements. In many larger universities, students may spend 5 or more years instead of 4, just because they can’t get into all their required classes. That is unheard of at Caltech. As per the last post, an occaisional humanities class or popular elective (such as cooking!) will fill, but not the required classes.

Some large schools have priority registration for athletes, honors college students, seniors trying to graduate etc. In Caltech, you do not need them in most cases. For the core classes, everyone needs to take it and they plan accordingly. For classes in your major, they are usually very small and hence there is no issue. The only issue is some electives as pointed out above. So it is not a big deal.

Also, most students at CalTech have a lot of AP’s, hence it is not a big distinguishing point. In some other schools, lots of AP’s can get you into the sophomore year or even junior year. At CalTech, having AP classes are par for the course.
