My S is a freshman and has seen his advisor (university division) and has a 11/17 registration slot. He has put classes into his shopping cart. How does this work, though? If they are in his cart, are they his? Does he need to register ASAP at his designated time or would an hour later be okay... he has a class then. Almost every one of his classes look in danger of closing out. Thanks!

Putting them in the shopping cart doesn’t guarantee he has a place in those classes. It’s a holding spot so if they are open, he can click them into his schedule. He wants to register as soon after his designated time as possible. He does need to plan for alternate class times, etc. My D looked at the her classes, and if they were still open, the night before and came up with some alternate times. If he has time right before he registers it’s a good idea to double check openings etc. With a single exception, D did get all the classes she wanted, but she had to change sections on some. One section she wanted was closed the night before, but reopened the morning she registered. She’s on the waitlist for that class. As much as freshman seem to want to avoid early classes, it’s not always possible.

I recall one parent here, maybe ILMOM, registering for her son because he was in class at his designated time.

When it’s his registration time, he’ll go to the shopping cart, check all his classes, and click “Enroll” at the bottom of the page. I think there’s a page that asks, “Are you sure you want to sign up for these classes?” (or something along those lines) and then he’s signed up.

He can register after the designated time, but the earlier he registers, the more likely he is to get the classes he wants.

I did click the Enroll button one semester for my son. He had the shopping cart ready, but had class at his registration time. Rather than miss class, he had me finalize his registration. He had some alternative choices selected as well, in case his first choices weren’t available.

The key is for your son to update his shopping cart as close to the registration time as possible.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the excellent suggestions!

D3, freshman, happily figured her schedule out last month and then was shocked to watch as one of the classes she had selected fill up within days of the seniors starting to register. I’m not sure why it never occurred to her that it could happen especially since there was only one section being offered with a total enrollment of 40! I happened to talk with her the night before her appointed registration time and suggested she check her shopping cart. Another of her classes now had only 4 slots open. 2 minutes before her time it had only one. She did get in though. And it’s a good thing because she didn’t have a plan B schedule worked out. I wonder if this experience will inspire my eternal optimist to plan for several back-up choices next time.
