When we sign up for classes on the last day of orientation, how is it done?

I mean that, can I just type in the course number in a search box or whatever and add the class at a desired time, or is it done in a different way?

Also, I don’t yet understand how the courses are listed in the course catalog.

For example, Irwin teaching Calc 408N teaches from 10-11 MWF. But under that there is a 1 hour meeting every T TH at different times, which explains why there are different course numbers for Irwin even the top line for each course occurs at the same time and day.

So basically, what do those bottom dates/times correspond with?

Bottom dates are TA sessions. The fastest way to register is to get the unique numbers from the course catalog and type them in when you register. You won’t even need to stand in line if you brought your own laptop or know someone with one.

all you need is each course’s five-digit unique number. however the night before, you should research the classes you want and basically create your schedule based on what’s open and the times etc. also, be sure to have back up classes in case the class you want fills up before you get a chance to sign up for it (this happened to a lot of people)

They’ll show you at orientation how to register. It’s really pretty simple and they have several OAs walking around the computer lab at the FAC so you can ask questions. You basically go to the course schedule, select what course from the drop-down, select lower-division, and it will take you to a page that lists all the lower division classes for that course. Up at the top of all those pages is a button that says Register. Type in the 6-digit unique number in the Add box and press submit.

For those 1 hour classes that you’re talking about, those are additional TA discussions. So for calc, all of you will be having lecture with the professor at the same time for 3 hours a week, but you’ll only be having your TA session with the people in your section for that 1 hour each week. TA sessions are very helpful for calculus depending on your TA of course since you can ask questions on homework. Many majors have these additional TA sessions and sometimes it’s even required that you attend since they may give participation grades or even quizzes.

Thanks for the replies, they help.

As for the TA times, is one required to go to only that TA session, or can a person freely go to a TA session for that teacher regardless if that’s isn’t his/her assigned one?

No you can go to other TAs sometimes. I did that for calc to get additional help. I also went to other professors for Cal 2 since I thought others taught it better. Same goes for office hours. As long as it’s for the same course with the same curriculum and you still get in all the work you need to, then it’s ok if you go to other professor’s/TA’s lectures/office hours. It may be beneficial to do so to understand concepts better.

Does registration take into account class times and conflicts? Like if I end up having to browse for a class because my initial picks were gone. Is there a filter or something of that nature that makes finding a certain class for a certain time easy?

Sorry for all the questions, just want to make sure I have the best chance of getting the classes I want.

yes, it won’t let you register for a class that conflicts with another time-wise
