Registration...

...how's it been treating everyone?

Freshmen: may you make it through this week alive. Godspeed.

haha why do you say that about freshman

^Because freshmen usually have the last registration time, which means it’s impossible for them to get into the classes they actually planned on taking/need to take.

True, though i’m not that worried about that considering i’m taking freshman EE classes that I don’t think will have very many upperclassmen. I might be back posting here about how much I was wrong in a few days.

Frever, do you have any suggestions on what professors to take for EE 319k and PHY 303K? Also, any suggestions on an approved VAPA course? http://www.ece.utexas.edu/files/forms/undergraduate/2010-VAPA-Electives.pdf

Out of the 6 classes I planned on taking, 2 were cancelled and 1 was waitlisted after the first day of registration. They didn’t tell us that the two classes were cancelled until the first day of registration and I wasted a bunch of time trying to find other classes. just my luck ugh LOL
I’m actually 1/8 or something on the waitlisted one, but there’s actually a good chance that it won’t budge at all lol (it hasn’t so far, I’ve been first on the waitlist since Wednesday) :(

I’d recommend taking Yerraballi for 319k. Going in to registration for 319k most people had the general idea that Valvano was the better teacher because he wrote the book. His class filled up first so I ended up with Yerraballi but don’t regret it at all. Most of the people in Valvano’s class ended up complaining about how boring he was and when Yerraballi subbed for him one day everyone agreed that Yerraballi was the much better lecturer. Yerraballi is definitely the more compassionate of the two. He’ll take late homework (don’t push him though) and grades all of the tests himself to make sure the grading is fair. Oh and from what I’ve hard you should avoid Bard.

With 303k you’re pretty much out of luck. Turner is supposed to be the best option but even he isn’t that great. I’d recommend taking both physics at ACC or another CC if possible. Also, I can’t comment on VAPA courses as I claimed AP credit for it and didn’t really ask around/hear any complaints.

You should start planning out your schedule now if you haven’t already and create back ups and back ups for the backups on your important classes. The adding a class 30 seconds later can mean adding the class a good 4 or 5 people later in some cases. Come in prepared. I may be neurotic about it but getting the preferred professor may be the difference between 1 hr of hw a week and 3 hrs. A couple minutes before registration time, I’d open up about 50 tabs of the “Spring 2012 Registration” link and at 1 minute til I keep on clicking the link and closing the tab until it lets me through.

Also, if you’re on a waitlist, have faith. They normally move through right after add/drop or at the beginning of the semester when people drop the class.

Any suggestions for VAPA or social science courses? I’m looking for an easy because I have a lot of things on my plate next semester.

Hey do transfers get the worst classes?

@J2324h I’m actually pretty scared of that too because my orientation is with the freshmen year.

I’m going to be an exchange student in my very last semester of my university degree. And I really need to complete 2 core subjects which are upperclass subjects and I really don’t want to have to come back home to do them. If the waiting lists dont work is there any chance of just manually enrolling (i.e. gettting signed off by the lecturer to do the class - like what happens at my current uni)? Or can I email the lecturer before hand about it and see if they can ‘reserve’ a spot as such (which happens at my university with study abroad students)?

Amerie, you can always try but I don’t think they’re too open to that. I’ve heard of a few seniors taking an extra semester because they couldn’t get into the classes they needed. However, this will vary with major/concentration.

i was a transfer, and things ended up working out ok for me. But I can’t seem to get into any UGS classes!!? All of them are closed… whats a girl to do… sigh

I hate how we have restricted time periods. Once your day has come, it would be nicer, in my opinion, to have the system stay open until registration period ends, rather than be assigned certain “blocks” of time (because most people are in classes and have conflicts)

Amerie

ya i know…im scared because im transfering from ACC and i will only need my upper division courses at UT and those classes fill up very fast. I think im probably going to get stuck with classes that i dont really need.

How large are the Fundamentals of Acting classes (TD 303)? What number and lower on the wait list would you expect to get in?

Old thread, I know but I thought I’d answer this question just to get the info out there.

If you’re ever wondering how large a class is, you’ll notice that the number given by the course schedule is based on the size of that class’s discussion section, not the full class. If you want to get a more accurate idea of how big the lecture audience will be, you can look here: [CIS Results Search](<a href=“Sign in with your UT EID - Stale Request”>Sign in with your UT EID - Stale Request). This is where all of the course instructor surveys are published for student review. Search for the instructor teaching the course, open the link and you’ll find the number of surveys submitted and returned, along with the results of the survey.

You can assume that the number of surveys handed out is equal to the class size, and you can get a rough idea of how many people show up to class by seeing how many of those surveys were submitted.

Good luck on registration this semester, guys!

Hey frever, any recommendations on EE411 professors? Also, I’ve heard 411 is a lot of differential equations stuff. Since i’m going by the 4 year plan, differential equations and circuit theory are in the same semester. Should I maybe not take then simultaneously?

Sorry, I’m no longer in EE :(

:/ Can I ask why? You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to.

Sorry, the sad face was unintentionally melodramatic. I transferred out because I am a pre-med and realized that I could have more time to develop my application if I didn’t use such a large portion of it studying material that would become essentially useless once I graduate. It’s not that I didn’t like the material or that I was struggling. It was just a matter of time management.

Hahaha, the sad face on this forum is just so… sad… :frowning:

Also, note to freshmen/incoming freshmen: registration does NOT get easier or less frustrating. I was all geared up to register on Tuesday and an advising bar showed up at the last moment. Grrr.
