Registration?

Have most entering freshmen completed registration? My daughter is still waiting for her SIS adviser to get back to her regarding her registration planner. She has called and left two messages, emailed and was told that she would get back to her asap.

Hi pushydad,

What is your daughter’s question? I’m a current student at AU and when I was an incoming freshman I also had some issues with the registration planner. Until you hear back from the adviser, and I may be able to help.

She was unable to fit American Government as SIS suggests because of conflicts with the only open sections. Instead she selected World Govt. The conflicts arose because of her UC Seminar (Public Health) and freshman seminar (America and the World) which could not be moved. Her adviser asked her to switch the World to American Government but offered no suggestion about how to accomplish this. Emails and calls have gone unanswered for a week and now she is nervous that she will be closed out of the classes she has selected.

It’s not unusual for freshman to not get their first choice classes. If the only open sections of American Government conflicts with her UC and Freshman Seminar, she should register for another class (like World Government, or any other class she’s interested in). It’s likely that her adviser didn’t realize the conflict when she suggested American Government. Your daughter can waitlist for a section of American Govt with the hopes of getting off the waitlist. Many people change their schedules during the first two weeks of classes and she may be able to get a spot in the class. If not, just try to register for it in the spring semester. While SIS may recommend it in the first semester, she won’t be at any disadvantage by waiting.

In the mean time, your daughter should register for the classes. Make sure to register for a full course load in the event that she does not get off the waitlist for American Govt. Register as soon as possible so she doesn’t get closed out of any other classes, some may fill up fast.

I’m sorry to hear that the adviser isn’t returning your daughter’s calls or e-mails. If your daughter really want to speak to an adviser, contact another SIS adviser. They’ll be able to pull up her records and answer any more specific questions, hopefully faster than her official adviser.

I agree with empowered. Your daughter needs to make her schedule while classes are still open. If the American Government does not fit in her schedule now, there is no detriment in taking it next semester. I would also do what empowered suggested - have your daughter contact another SIS adviser if she needs to speak with someone.

Has freshman registration started?
I thought it took place closer to the first of June.

(I just looked back through old email. My daughter’s “Freshman Guide” was due on 5/31 the first time, and our interactions with her advisor about her course selection took place ~5/25-5/26 the second time. She did this twice because she was waiting to hear from a gap year program before deferring matriculation. But, both times, the registration didn’t open until more like June 1st. They may have changed the time lines this year, of course.)
