Registration!

My daughter had a good experience today registering. She went on right at 2pm and got all of the classes she wanted including a Dean's Seminar and the UW she wanted. The hard ones were the discussion sections for larger lectures since they are small. Make sure to have a whole list written down of the sections and their CRN numbers so if one is closed you can move on rapidly to the next choice, etc. She first chose the Dean's Seminar, submitted that, then the UW submitted that, and then went one course at a time after that with it's corresponding discussion section. I think the fewer you try to submit at one time the better or it could get confusing. She only ended up with one 8am discussion section and all the rest of her classes start later so she was happy about that. Good luck to those registering in the next few days!

Ditto for my son - being prompt and prepared like they said @ CI helped. He got his 2nd choice for UW, only because the course/topic he wanted were full before he even registered.

CJ

Actually, now that I think about it, the same thing happened to her. Her initial first choice for UW only had one spot left as of yesterday and then it closed this morning. (There wasn’t much hope for getting that one all along!) So, she technically got her second choice UW like your son did. I’m just glad it’s done and she is happy with her chosen classes/schedule. There is a sense of relief and she can really start getting excited about going.

How do you know how many spots are remaining in a class?

I actually registered today also, I logged on at 1:30, they kicked me off at 1:58, and then logged back in at 2pm. It took me one minute, and I got all of my classes for the semester. Its good to have your choice CRNs in view at 2pm and not searching for classes to add. Also make sure you have the classes with discussions CRN also. The smaller classes (UW 20 and Discussion) go really quick. I checked for a friend and the UW classes were full within the first 30 minutes (except for some 8am courses)

@shasushmom: Log into the BanWeb portal and go to the Registration Menu and click Look Up Classes to Add. Then follow the simple selections. It will tell you how many spots are in the class total and remaining. The Schedule of Classes just says open or closed not an amount.

smom: Don’t worry when you see everything is “closed” right now because they reserved equal spots for all 3 registration dates for freshmen. So, if a class had 60 open spots they only released 20 today and then 20 will be released at each of the next 2 dates as it gets closer to the actual registration time.

Thanks saf: I was beginning to panic!
Every single class that my ‘D’ chose is now closed.
She has to register tomorrow morning.

well, D didn’t have the same good luck that ya’ll had.
she had her CRN’s all lined up, plenty of backups (thank goodness), and started right at 2:00, but things filled too fast.

3rd choice for UW - disappointing, but not the end of the world.

got the history class she wanted, so that’s good.

didn’t get the math class she wanted so she had to settle for a political science class with a teacher with across the board terrible reviews on ratemyprofessor.

two concerning parts:

 1. almost all of her classes are clumped onto tuesday and thursdays - back to back classes all day.
2. she’s taking a history-based UW, intro to american history and intro to american politics… very reading and writing heavy load. wish there was a math or science instead of one of those courses… but everything was closed.

so that scheudle is far from ideal.

do ya’ll happen to know when the drop/add window is?
she’s got a list of 3 classes that she’ll keep checking on to see if she can add one of thema and then drop the poly sci class.

I’d like someone to explain to me how a UW 20 class can be full before ANY freshman register? I mean it is a freshman only class - right? I know honors doesn’t get the early reg until next semester. Could it be the “Atheletes” of transfer students???

CJ

I said the same thing. a UW 20 was full last week. But no one registers until today.

My daughter was unable to get any of her UW20 course choices. I see that there are still openings and obviously they are reserved for the next round. Does anyone know when they open up again for everyone?

I don’t know when registration reopens for everyone (that info should be on the registrar’s webpage), but half the freshman will be taking UW next semester, so not everyone will be able to successfully register for that course for the fall.

This is the explanation of when different groups can register:
[The Office of the Registrar (GWU)](http://www.gwu.edu/~regweb/web-content/registration/gen_info_fall2010.html)

if anyone can make heads or tails of that and tell us when incoming freshman can go back in to try to add/drop, i’d be grateful.

every time i read it it seems to mean something different.
:)

registration reopens July 13th

Everyone - a quick message about registering:

When you are a frosh (and soph) and they break up the registration days (e.g., half registers today and half tomorrow) they also break up the number of spots available.

So if you are not registering until tomorrow, for example, and it says the class is full, only half the spots are actually full and the rest will open up during tomorrow’s registration.

yeah… i didnt get any of the good classes that i wanted. awesome
btw does anyone know where to sign up for the discussions for the FYDP programs (business school)? i can’t find it on the master schedule

ahh nevermind, the advising office replied to my email about the fydp

does anyone know when they’ll start taking people off the waitlist for the language classes?

My daughter did well this time around, got almost all she wanted. Was a VERY different experience than my older daughter, who freaked out and got NOTHING on her list and was totally frustrated. I think the main difference was level of organization, rank ordering and being there on the dot of the signup time. Seems like there should be a better way. Hang in sunnysh1h, my older daughter did a whole lot better from the second semester onward.

i think D will have to ask her boss for the day off on July 13… so she can try to register for other classes!
