Registration!

1sttimemom: Don’t expect that suddenly on the 13th things will open up. Your D may have to keep checking, sometimes multiple times per day, to find openings in classes she wants to take. S had to do this for a class he wanted to take in a spring semester which suddenly had an opening while he was home for Christmas break.

shellfell - what’s the process for adding a class which opens when there’s already a class scheduled in that same time slot? What we don’t want to do is drop one and then when we go to add the open course it’s gone. This happened to my “D” at another school and really screwed her schedule.

Is there a “Swap” function or does the program allow you to book two classes at the same time and then drop the other.

Thanks

CJ

CJ - I’ve been through this many times.

There is a “swap” but it is not, unfortunately, conditional on the class you want to add being free.

All the classes for which you are registered appear at the top of the add/drop web page, and you can select the “drop” option.
Scroll down and empty CRN boxes appear under this section, where you would type in the CRN of the class(es) you’d like to register.
When you click the add/drop button at the bottom of the web page, the system will simultaneously drop and add your requested classes if the class you are adding is available.

If the class you are adding is full, it will only drop the class you asked it to drop and give you an error message for the class you’re trying to register.

To prevent yourself from losing any spots, here’s what I recommend:
-Check the class list in GWeb and make sure the class you want has an open spot. Write down/copy the CRN.
-Immediately go to the add/drop page and select the drop option of the class you want to drop, and fill in the empty CRN box with the class you’d like to add.
-Before clicking the register button, write down the CRN of the class you are DROPPING. Therefore, if you do get shut out of the class you’re registering for you can quickly re-register for the class you just dropped.
-Hit the button and see what happens! The drop will always work; if the class you are registering for happens to suddenly be full, you can just retype the CRN of the old class and re-register.

Good luck!

gwstudent - Thanks! I was afraid that was the mechanism. My “D” tried this and the time it took for her to Drop one class and add the other (Which filled that quickly, she lost her slot in the original class. Probably just poor luck.

UNC Chapel Hill’s registration system is much more advanced and will actually swap the classes with one click. Maybe GW will upgrade away from the antiquated Banner system at some point!

Unfortunately the system works as gwstudent described. The program won’t let you register for 2 courses that are held at the same time. I would definitely follow gwstudent’s suggestion to keep the CRN of the class you’re dropping handy so you can re-add it quickly if the class you’re trying to add is full.

Hi current students! I need some clarification on dropping and adding. If you are already registered for a course, say Intermediate Spanish I, and you want to get into a different section of that same course, do you have to drop your currently registered course first and then add the same course (different section) second, or can you do all that in one step? My S was told by his counselor that if he tries to do it all in one step, he will get an error message. Is this true, or can he do it all in one step?

four - see gwstudent’s post above for procedure.

thanks gwstudent and shellfell for the insights!

your accounts jive with what the registrar’s office told us when we called. (tho your account, gwst, is much more detailed, thank you so much!)

thanks shellfell for the info about not banking on july 13th. appreciate the tip!

D REALLY wants to chenge on class and is hopeful that she’ll get a spot in a different UW20 class.
we’ll see what happens!

fouryears -

You cannot be registered for different sections of the same course at the same time, regardless of the class meeting times. You should be able to simultaneously add and drop; see my above post for instructions.

Good luck!

Thanks, gwstudent. Too bad GW’s system isn’t like Chapel Hill’s “swap”. That would save lots of aggravation because you wouldn’t have to risk losing your spot. Maybe someday!

Hey everyone, I’m not sure if this has been asked already, but I would like to switch discussion sessions for MicroEcon 11. Same class, just want a different time for the discussion. Would I have to drop the class entirely, and then add the course again along with new discussion? Or could I just add the CRN for the new discussion session, and drop the old one? I don’t want to take the chance of losing my spot in the class if I have to drop the class first. I’m so confused! haha

Also, there is no problem with adding a class that doesn’t conflict with my original schedule right? For example, I want to add a science class on Monday in the afternoon. As of now, I have nothing scheduled for that time slot. So I can easily just add a class there right? Sorry, if I’m talking in circles, I don’t know how else to explain it :p

Britt -
i’m sure the other folks will have more information for you, but one thing to watch out for is that there is a credit “cap” of 19.
according to what the registrars office told us when we called, if adding a class (which doesn’t conflict with other classes, so it’s just adding not add-dropping) will put you at 19 credits, the system won’t let you add the class.

If you’re in Elliott, the credit cap is 17 credits. I’m not sure if that’s made it into the bulletin or not, but they sent us messages about the switch during the spring semester.

1sttimemom, I didn’t know about that. Thanks for the heads up!
gwfb2012, yeah i’m in the Elliot School so I’ll probably end up dropping a class to keep under the 17 credits. Thanks for the response!
