how does class registration work and how do u know what all the classes your school offers are about?

Look up the course catalog at your university's website (ex. uiuc.edu) that you're interested in. If you are interested in a particular major (my sister was trying to differentiate between physical therapy at a few schools) type in the major and follow it with curriculum on the search engine (ex. Chemical Engineering Curriculum) that most schools have on their webpage. That should pretty much explain everything.

Colleges generally have their course catalogs on line in their Academics web pages. Most also have web pages showing general education requirements (types of courses everyone has to take) and lists of courses that meet the requirements. They will also have pages showing their majors and courses required to graduate in a major.

As to actual registration, it depends on the college. Many have gone to early registration programs done on line -- for new freshman this often involves going to a summer orientation session where they take you through the entire registration process and then you register at the end of it. Others may still follow a process of registering shortly before the semester begins.

We have a course catalog that tells you which classes you need for your major, requirements, and a brief description of the class. Then, each quarter a registration guide is printed (and posted online) which tells you what classes are offered at which time, who teaches what section, and a CRN number which is what you use to register.

Online we have a portal which tells you each quarter what times you can register (each person given a different time).. then you go online at those times and enter in the CRN numbers.
