S was accepted, 3.86 uw GPA/34 ACT. Will probably come down to Oxy or Colorado College. Time for some visits. Good luck to all of you.

DC rejected, great essay, interesting EC’s, solid recs, good supplements. 3.7uw GPA, 26 ACT. Not a surprise because of the ACT score, but still disappointing. Congrats and GL to all!

Waitlisted…very surprised. 2030 SAT, Great Essays/recs, School Dux, URM, founded multiple clubs including student council, lots of leadership, national champion in dance… I didn’t realise Oxy was one of those schools high enough on the ladder to make a habit of rejecting people who finish top of their class…well what can you do I guess

Son accepted: 3.4 UW GPA/Weighted somewhere around 4.0 (school doesn’t weight, but he has taken all the most difficult courses); 31 ACT/2060 SAT; Student Council VP (4 years on Council, 2 as officer); Model UN since Middle School; co-President of JSA/Debating; lots of other activities; summer service trip to Navajo Reservation in '12, and volunteer at Boys & Girls Club in central Newark in '13. White/Caucasian male; private boarding school; NJ resident. Oxy met FAFSA EFC with straight grant, but it might not be enough. Also considering Willamette (very generous merit scholarship), New College of Florida (unbeatable price tag), UCSD and Davis (out-of-state price tag about the same as cost for Oxy). Son also accepted at Tulane, but financial offer was insulting - only loans, and didn’t even meet FAFSA EFC; good scholarship offers to Eckerd and Guilford; rejected by UNC-Chapel Hill and Claremont-McKenna; wait-listed by University of Washington and Reed; still awaiting word from Berkeley (huge reach), Pitzer (probably unaffordable), and Whitman.

S2 accepted with nice aid package - 4.35 weighted GPA, 32 ACT, top 7% of small class, wrote very strong essays, good recs. Still waiting for Pomona, accepted with merit aid at Tulane, leaning towards Tulane because of family tradition and love of NOLA, but really liked Oxy.

Congratulations on the merit aid package at Tulane; it would have been a stronger option if our son qualified, but we are hoping to avoid incurring any debts at all, and the price-tag is just too high for us - he didn’t fall in love with Tulane or NOLA, and so he decided to pass on them.

Accepted! 3.8/4.1/34 ACT (I was the first replier). Good essays and ECs.

@denverwa if you’re curious, I received the Dean’s scholarship for 10k/year.

Anyone going to the admitted students day on the 4th?

@woogzmama - S2 is still working on whittling down the $7.5K in loans that Tulane is offering - at this point he’s almost got it covered and is applying for about 10 scholarships to further reduce our contribution, so it will probably be doable. Oxy’s package is comparable when you factor in travel - we live in Texas, and Tulane is a day’s drive and he can share driving trips home with his brother, who is graduating from law school there in May and hopes to find a job in that area. I am hoping for Pomona because they cover 100% after EFC with no loans, but it is a very, very tough school to get into. He loved Oxy when we visited in October, and so did I, but once Tulane sent the acceptance he just hooked into that and didn’t let go. I’ll be curious to see what happens with Pomona! Oh, ps he was also rejected ED at Claremont, his first choice, and took it very hard. Your son has some great choices there. If he gets into Pitzer they also cover balance of EFC with no loans. Best of luck to him!

Admitted! 4.4 GPA and 1890 SAT. Good extracurriculars and really good supplements that are probably the reason I got in considering my low SAT score. Oxy is my top choice but the ridiculous price will probably keep me from going, especially since they gave me no merit and I got nothing from FAFSA…I may choose UCSD or Davis over it for this reason :/

Accepted! 1950 SAT, full IB diploma (35), excellent extracurriculars (founded a company, editor of my school’s newspaper, internships, etc) and I worked really hard on my supplements. Glad Oxy practices holistic admissions. Super keen on attending Oxy because of the Group Language major and the Oxy at the UN program! Wish there was more info on the Group Language major online because I won’t be able to attend the admitted students day as I’m an international :(

Accepted with Dean’s Scholarship! :)

Hey guys, accepted with a 3.96 GPA, 30 ACT, national competition accolade and awesome extracurriculars (interview went great as well.)

When do we find out about financial aid?

Hi all! Accepted, I’ve posted my stats earlier on. I’m an international, & I didn’t get any merit aid so I don’t know if I’ll attend. I’ll definitely choose it over Emerson if it comes down to that, though.

I second marshall’s question about financial aid. Anyone knows when we find out?

S was waitlisted :/. Oxy is high on his list so he’s going to accept a place on the list, but may take it off depending on what he hears from a few other schools next week. Has 3.1 UW (very hard private school, but a few Cs here and there hurt), 29 ACT (32 reading, 31 English, 10 writing–science score brought it down), great recs and ECs. Accepted EA from Willamette with great merit aid, as well as Univ. of Puget Sound (also generous aid package). Leaning now toward Willamette (great school–beautiful location, great vibe) but we’ll see…Congrats to all those admitted!

Does anyone know whether waitlisted students would be offered any merit aid if accepted? I’m assuming the pool of money would open up some if first-round students accept other offers.

Oxy was my first choice, but I was shocked find out how much they think I should be able to afford. The financial aid offer said I should pay $50,000 every year. I love Oxy and really want to attend, so what do you guys recommend I do?

Waitlisted

Well, a lot of factors go into your decision. Is your family able to afford the $50,000/yr? Are you willing to take on the loans? What are your other options for schools?

In general, I’m going to say that $200,000 in debt may not a smart choice!

What are your stats and other options?
