I applied to the CALS for Communication. What do you think?

extremely good shot

I hope you're right. I'm afraid my sat's are a little low. But thanks for the confidence boost!

anyone else have an idea?

With really awesome essays and recc's, and showing dedication to your ec's, I think you have a shot... you can't really say. But SATs aren't the deciding factor.

sat is not necessarily low. your scores are not like out of the roof but they're definitely good and well in the range for cornell (1290-1490 middle 50% according to collegeboard). what stands out are the valedictorian status and AP scores. work on your essays and get good recs, i think your chance is very respectable.

hmm it's hard... what is your GPA? and what are you applying to?

my sister is in the college of arts and sciences and she had:
1470 (old sat) combined v and m
GPA: A-
amazing ECs (president and co-founder of one volunteer group, regional orchestra, etc.)

if it's engineering i would say waitlist

my gpa is 100.72%
my school doesn't use a 4.0, so i guess this would be a 4.0.

and i applied to CALS for communication.

:-

wow.

great.

if its CALS, then i wouldn't worry much.
it also depends heavily on your essay. your essay will show if you're passionate or you're just doing random stuff so that you'll write it on your apps.

if you were college of arts and sciences, i would be a bit worried.

to give you an idea:
my sister is at the college of arts and sci.

her gpa was: A-
SAT score: combined 1470 (old)
asian american
sat ii: 780 (math 2c); 790 (japanese)

ECs (co-founded a music group that plays at nursing homes, etc, fencing j-v, won several fencing competitions, violin since age 5, regional violin orchestra first violin, violin competition 2nd place and 3rd, etc.)

APs:
Art Hist: 4
Calc AB-AP: 5
Calc BC-AP: 5
Physics C: 5

hope this helps

your sister's stats don't help anyone stop posting them on every thread

erm...

ok.

i just wanted people to use them as reference.

i think you could've been nicer about it.

Okay people, I've noticed some issues with the SAT averages we're giving. The middle 50% at Cornell is NOT 1290-1490. Thats more like the middle 80%. You cannot add up Cornell's two seperate SAT middle 50 percentiles (V:630-730 M:660-760) to get the overall middle 50 percentile. This is because very few people are going to be in the same percentile in both sections.
....just thought I'd bring it up.

okay, quick question. If you are applying to engineering, they are still looking for a well-rounded individual, similar to the other colleges, not a huge science geek whose only extracurricular is getting 1st places continuously in science fairs, and nothing else, right?

pugachev makes sense.

but this works to your advantage, since 1490 would be closer to the top scorers amongst cornellians.

If you look up the middle 50% for SAT scores in US News & World Report from the 2006 edition it says: 1290-1490

Can i hijack this thread? Great. Since were on the subject:
I am applying to the engineering school rd:
SAT: 2320- 790 verbal/770 math/760 writing
SATII: 780 math2c/ 750 chemistry
gpa unweighted 3.58 (i am currently taking 5 ap's this (senior) year, took two last year). I am a student pilot training for my private pilot's license, I have been playing drums for 5 years, I have been volunteering for Habitat for Humanity for a couple years now. I dont believe in porridge. <- thats my main EC
Incredible EC's aside..anybody have an idea on chances?

if you have an interview i wouldn't think you'd have a chance, assuming attitude is taken into consideration.

I envy your powers of character judgement. Such astute and well-referenced observations you make.

You asked about your chances. I'm no expert, but I took into consideration not only the information in your post, but the manner in which you presented it.
