Hook: I can get recruited onto Dartmouth's swim team, I have the times to get on there and have been in contact with the coach

I'm not incredibly fast, but I have gone a 2:21 200 breastroke and a 1:05 100 breastroke. That's basically all I swim, but apparently it's fast enough for Dartmouth. I would be the second or third fastest in the 200 breastroke on their team right now. Oh, and I'm male to clear things up.

i'm a swimmer (girl) too and i applied RD to dartmouth. i really really wanna go there...so i emailed the coach the other day...ya know, just telling him that i'm still really interested and everything. i think dartmouth is a perfect fit for me academically as well as swimming wise. i go 59 in 100 back, and 2:07 in 200 back so i'd be right up there at dual meets and on relays. he emailed me back this generic response, like 'thanks for your interest. i already have your information.' i thought he be more like 'that's awesome that your still interested, maybe we could get you up here for an official visit' anyway, i hope i get in..but i have some serious doubts. do you think i should email him again and ask to go on an official visit? cause (unless he has already recruited a backstroker) i'm sure he'd want me on the team. good luck :-)

ERHS: I'm a Dartmouth alum and one thing you might not know about Dartmouth is that it's typically not anyone's backup school. Dartmouth was the first choice of virtually all of my classmates. Too bad about Yale but I'm fairly certain that the Ivies share information about who's applied where. I also went to graduate school at Yale - I'm thankful it was only two years. What are the similarities between New Haven and Hanover that led you to apply to both schools. Have you actually been to either school. You should really think about the environment you want. Yale and Dartmouth are like day and night. Maybe you should be thinking about another urban school instead of Dartmouth.

BigGreen: "I'm a Dartmouth alum and one thing you might not know about Dartmouth is that it's typically not anyone's backup school. "

That probably explains why last year we have a guy from school (elite prep) apply but got rejected in Dartmouth RD. He was viewed a very strong candidate for Harvard but got deferred EA, then rejected RD.
Hmmmnn, maybe Ivies do really share information?

BigGreen:"Dartmouth was the first choice of virtually all of my classmates."

One of my strongest classmate this year (who we expected to apply to H), toured the schools on his list, fell in love with Dartmouth, and applied ED. He's now a very proud member of Dartmouth 2011.

Agree, Yale and Dartmouth are like day and night.

Well keep in mind that swimming is not a $$ sport and the coaches don't have the power of the coaches of more popular sports. Combine that with the fact that the coaches work with most of their picks way before now and I'm not surprised by the generic response.

Dartmouth actually wanted to cut the swim teams a couple of years ago.

I don't think they've had the chance to respond because of their training trip. It should be ending today or tomorrow, but if you don't hear a response within a week, send another email. BTW, I haven't gotten a response yet either. And from what I've been looking at on their roster, most of their current swimmers, at least for guys, swim freestyle. That's good news for us! (I'm a breastroker)

"I'm a Dartmouth alum and one thing you might not know about Dartmouth is that it's typically not anyone's backup school. "

Then why is its yield only 50%? Which means it's a back-up school, or, at least, ultimately not the first choice school for 50% of accepted candidates. Not to mention all the Princeton rejects who end up finding their way to Hanover, who are included in the enrolled stats. Don't get me wrong, I think Dartmouth is the best overall undergrad experience in the country. However, to make such vociferous claims like that is misleading and not supported by the reported numbers.
