Common essay: Topic of choice, talked about my home life struggles which addressed my poor GPA for 11th grade which is why my overall GPA is so low. The writing itself was not amazing but the content is what made my essay stand out.
ILR Supp essay: I personally believe this is what is my highlight; specifically for the ILR school. I talked of my academic interests of business law, economics,
political science, and psychology. The key theme was my goal is to eventually
earn a J.D. / M.B.A., after law school, and the curriculum of the School of Industrial and
Labor Relations is in every way the perfect starting path. After earning my J.D. / M.B.A entering the field(s) of business management, legal adviser, or talent representative.

Sports:
Wrestling(Folk and freestyle): 9th & 10th
Lacrosse: 9th(Goalie), 10th(Goalie), 11th(defense man)
{Notable for sports: *8th grade dislocated my right shoulder in freestlye state qualifying tournament which resulted in my labrum and rotator cuff being torn and had to have total reconstructive shoulder surgery.

  • Fall of 9th grade i was released to return to full contact sports from my shoulder. exactly a week from my release i dislocated my right knee cap in a match. ( I rushed through physical therapy to make the lacrosse team in spring; changing from attack to goalie to accommodate my physical needs.
  • 10th grade wrestling season re-dislocated my right knee[no more competitive wrestling]
*10th grade did not make my high school lacrosse team, which lead me to play on a club(not the summer club mentioned)
  • 11th grade re-dislocated my right knee again. But i put myself through my own physical therapy because i did not want surgery and played lacrosse in spring.
*12th grade i was assaulted in Nov. and weeks later found out that i had a right jaw fracture and re-tore my right shoulder labrum.
*12th grade re-dislocated my right knee in Feb.
  • I will be having surgery on my knee and shoulder in the summer.}

Family Life: I have three sister; 6, 8, and 15. My father lived in SF most of 10th grade completing an interventional neruoradiology fellowship then after he was done was deployed to Afghanistan(Navy) 11th grade , then after he came back had to go back to UCSF to refresh his practice because of the deployment. I was forced assume the dual role of high school student and caretaker. The stresses on my mother were great; she not only had to worry about my father’s safety but also managing a household with 4 children by herself. At first, my role was to help my mother with daily household duties. However, she became despondent over the circumstances and slipped into a deep depression. She was barely able to take care of herself, much less take care of her children. We had no family locally to help us so I then became the default parent for my younger sisters. My school work suffered from these demands, which is most evident during my junior year. I did not tell anyone about my situation at home. I realized mental illness carries a stigma in our society and felt ashamed of my circumstances. My mother’s symptoms were that of depression, paranoia, and delusions. Her paranoia and delusions were so strong on occasions, she would not let me leave the house because of her fear that “they would get her.” Other times I did not feel comfortable leaving my mother alone with my younger sisters; I missed many days of school because of this. My mother attempted suicide during this time and finally began to receive the help she desperately needed. As she was getting beginning to show some signs of recovery, her mother was diagnosed with metastatic kidney cancer and given only a few months to live. My mother pulled me and my sisters out of school in March 2008 and we relocated to Colorado to spend time with my grandmother. My mother started to do poorly again spiraling down in depression following the death of my grandmother. I continued to be the primary caregiver for my sisters. I felt overwhelmed by the situation but still too ashamed to discuss the situation with anyone at my school. My parents separated at the beginning of 12th grade. Also my 15 year old sister has been committed 2 times in my high school career for having suicidal tendencies.

Myslef: I have an extreme anxiety disorder. I am a perfectionist, excessive worrier, i over generalize and catastrophize. i have ocd characteristics. it rules my life i hate it. I briefly mentioned of my anxiety disorders prominence in my everyday life. I combat
it by utilize breathing techniques, psychological therapy, psychiatric aid, muscle relaxation, and hobbies.

In the summer time I am a lifeguard at a country club. I am also a singer, I have been working with a teacher from Skidmore college for the past 4 years. I am in 4 different singing groups at my school. I have been in multiple musicals and plays. Recently, I was Doria Hudson in Smile at my school. In the summer I usually do a show or work at a music festival. One of my friends is creating a musical and I am on his demo. I sent a copy of the demo to the ILR school. I also go to a very competitive all girl’s school.

In my essay I talked about my sister and how she has influenced me. She has R.A., and has accomplished so much while dealing with her disease. In the ILR supplement, I talked about what I wanted to with the ILR education- go into the entertainment industry and work with some sort of performer’s union. I eventually want to go to law school in order to be an entertainment lawyer.

I got an interview which went OK… My essays were very good. Cornell is my first choice.

interviews are a good sign. The person who interviewed me said interviews are to see the personality of the potential Cornellian. Be sure to send a thank you note to your interviewer.

balletdrummajor: I didnt get a chance. She gave me no contact info. The phone number came up as “Private Name, Private Number” which means it doesn’t register in the call log. I thanked her profusely in person though…

And I think I got an interview (and a CAAAN referral thing) because my mid-year grades were very good.
