Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: All of my stats are within range and I'm in state.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: ASU Barrett, University of Miami

oh, so you did get into Miami, tbb. congrats on that, too. you’re going to flee to the warmth and sunshine, aren’t you? south or west?

LOVE the school but have all but crossed it off due to price. They gave me a whopping $0 in merit aid off the $61,000 sticker price. I can get sunshine, D1 sports, and great academics at Barrett…

I got into Miami without any merit aid too. Can I ask how much ASU Barrett will cost you?

It’s about $20k. OOS cost is like $33k or something and I got $52k in merit. ($13k /yr)

The best of luck to you in Arizona!

teenbodybuilder: look closely at those Barrett costs. It’s more like $40k for OOS in Barrett. Barrett room and board is more expensive than other housing at ASU.

Yeah it’s actually around $24-26k all told after merit with the best meal plan and a private or double dorm. I think I said it on one of these threads but Georgetown will be subsidizing my last two years since that’s when my dad’s benefits kick in. We calculated it out awhile ago but total cost was about 70 for 4 years, it evens out with UMD.

“it evens out with UMD”
Are you taking into account the cost of travel?
Also, consider that you changed direction with what you wanted to major in - and that’s before you even start. Understand that once you start taking classes, you may find yourself gravitating to another area of interest entirely. Which school has the most options for solid programs in a variety of areas to give you that freedom to explore (and I ask that honestly not knowing the answer)?

Look, if Barrett is the right fit for you, of course that is where you should go, my questions be damned.

However, if you are saying, well, it’s equal in price and I get HONORS at Barrett, so that will be better for grad school admissions, that is an entirely different story. In another thread you said there is no one more dedicated than a body builder, and while I refrained from correcting you that mothers are in fact the most dedicated people you will ever find ;), I am going to put you to your word on dedication. If you are in fact that dedicated to succeeding in your studies, there is no reason to doubt you will be able to apply and be admitted to honors college in general after your freshman year http://honors.umd.edu/prospective-current.php</a> and/or departmental honors around junior year (every dept is diff, some may allow u to apply soph year).

So, don’t think so much about the cost as much as the fit. Bells and whistles of having honors aside, what school do you want to call home for the next four years? What feels the most right? Success has less to do with where you go to school than what you do when you get there. So, choose the place that you feel you will be happiest at because that is where you will be more likely to do your best.

I’ve come across tbb’s posts often here on CC. To me, it seems he clearly prefers ASU Barret over UMD (especially since he did not get into scholars or honors). Well, that’s my understanding.

I’m visiting for the first time next week, could end up not liking it. The school has a huge number of students outside honors which might turn me off. Barrett is an amazing opportunity though.

I’ll see about going to the UMD accepted students day on 2/28 before I make a final decision. Is it normal for it to be on a week day? Would be interested to see what it takes to do the honors transfer after 2 semesters GPA wise. I’m bummed out that I didn’t even get into scholars, so this tells me that UMD is a much more competitive school. At ASU, I’d be in the top 7% going in. How will this affect my GPA if I put in the same amount of work at both? Going to work my butt off either way.

Travel evens out since I’d have a car at UMD. Dad would be paying parking and gas instead of plane tickets. I might be able to bring the car to ASU, which would of course change the costs somewhat. But I agree that fit > price! I’m glad to have the luxury to not have to worry about this price difference.

I wouldn’t take changing majors as me changing my career path, it’s just changing the way I’m getting to that career path. Been around Drs all my life and have decided long ago. It’s competitive, so I definitely should have one feasible backup plan that I like.

Will compare options once I have the visits in. Thanks for all the input, everyone speaks highly of UMD so it’s obviously a strong choice. Most of my friends didn’t get in so I’m glad I have the choice. I’ve also talked to current med school students who attended Barrett and they strongly recommend it. It’s good to have options.

Hope you enjoy your visit. Just take time to see where your classes will be, where you will living, what campus your major it located at. The layout of ASU is very different than most state schools. Some students love the separation of Barrett while others feel very disconnected from the main campus/events/sports/social life.
