waitlisted in new jersey. wasn't that bad actually. the letter sounds really sincere.

accepted NJ...wow, there's a lot of NJians here :P

Denied :( Very nice letter, though.

Accepted in MA :).

UR Admissions: I too would like to thank you for your professionalism and grace through this process. Your patience and willingness to provide accurate information and answer questions is unmatched. While there may have been other institutions online answering questions, I didn't see any of them.

Thank you again.

Accepted: Maryland :) with a big fat FA package that has enabled my D's dream to come true. We are blessed.

i am in!

ny here.

i am in too!! i must say, i was not excited or anxious before receiving the notification, but when i got the letter, i was overjoyed! i will probably end up going. And also, thanks UR Admissions for your help. I have not seen anyone from admissions posting on here for the other 13 schools to which I applied. I think that says something!

Congrats to all acceptees!!!

My D was waitlisted (polite rejection). I'm dissapionted and a bit confused. This was her best fit school in my mind.

National Merit Finalist, SAT 1460/2240, good (but not great) GPA, varsity sports, student council, very good community service ECs, personal visit to campus, no problems or red flags. Can't quite figure out what went wrong.

sclark, puzzling as the SAT is way above avg for UR.

For those admitted, has anyone been receiving any mention of merit $ (other than those that were Richmond Scholar or Presidential Scholarship).

Not sure what UR is/has been giving in the way of other incremental merit $ amounts.

Any feedback?

I got a University Grant for $22,280 in merit and then some loans and work study. And that $4K loan cap is per semester. I think I can make it work, I'm having "the talk" with my parents this weekend.

P.S. Just a caution - maybe don't give out too much information about your parent's finances, I was on some other schools' threads and people are getting all ****ed off at each other about some people getting more aid than others, etc. We're all in the same boat, trying to figure out how to do this without being in huge debt for the rest of our lives!

sclark14--a wait list is not a polite rejection or certainly not intended that way. The last several years there have been significant students from the wait list who are ultimately offered admission. There is no guarantee of course, but if she is seriously interested in Richmond, I hope she'll say yes to staying on the wait list so we can see if there will be space available. I think if you go to the thread on "stats of accepted students" you'll see what the answer to what puzzles you about why she was wait listed. Since you say her GPA was good but not great--that's it I feel quite sure. We place higher weight on grades than on SAT scores. If you want to talk about her situation in particular, please feel free to call our office to talk to a counselor who can pull her file and talk with you about it.

Clarification to wavewatcher--I hate to bust your bubble but that University Grant is need-based money, not merit-based money. But I hope that distinction wouldn't matter. This is what we mean by "meeting 100% of need". The $4K loan cap is per academic year, NOT per semester, so that is a very big difference in your favor.

Best wishes to all!

UR Admissions-
Regarding UR's "meeting 100% of need" position, approx what portion do loans make up of this gap, vs $ that does not need to be repaid (grants, scholarships)? i.e. let's round off total UR costs to $50K for sake of discussion and someone's EFC came in at $24K, leaving a need-gap of $26K.

I know you can't state anything written in stone on this, but an approximate range perhaps?
All if all, if a sizable part of 'meeting 100% of need' is actually loans, the 'meeting need' mantra is diluted; you're still having to pay, but it's simply stretched out over time.

Also, besides the Richmond Scholar and Pres Scholarship awards, what other levels of merit are awarded by UR?

To UR Admissions:

I'm an international students. About one week ago, all my friends who applied to UR receive an email telling them they were admitted but no Financial Aid was given. But I hear nothing from UR till now. When will I get my decision by email? Do I have a chance to get Aid?

jomass--good questions. In your scenario, if a student's need is determined to be $26K, the student would receive $22K in grant money (never to be re-paid) and $4K in "self-help" which would be a combination of loan and work study. If the student were a Virginia resident, he or she would have $3200 of that self help portion met with the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG, and the amount is set by the Va General Assembly, so the amount can vary from year to yeark, but we're working with $3200 this year) and would then only be responsible for another $800 with either a campus job or a small loan. If the student were not a US citizen, their aid would be ALL grant, as non-US citizens can not get loans without a US co-signer, and we don't think it is fair to expect international students to have a person in the US who would be willing to do that.

All this IS written in stone. No one would get more that $4K/year in need-based loans. That said, some families do borrow above the $4K in order to make part of their EFC's, so that is the full disclosure part of this bit.

Beyond Richmond Scholar and Presidential Scholarships, there are small awards for National Merit/Achievement/Hispanic recognition. There are no other academic merit based scholarship programs but there are talent awards in music/theatre/dance, ROTC scholarships, and Bonner Scholarships for community service. And Division I athletic scholarships.

yanzijohndoe--why don't you private message me with your name so I can look you up and find out what your individual situation is and get back to you. I can do that on MOnday when I am back inthe office. Thanks for waiting patiently--I don't know what the situation might be, so I'd like to be able to investigate.

UR Admissions: I received tuition through ACS but I'm also a National Merit Finalist. Can I combine my NMF money with the tuition remission?
