Regular student?

I have read different posts about kids entering UA with “titles” ie. “honors” “Crimson Edge” etc. How do these students find out if they can apply to an" honors" college or if they are “Crimson Edge?” I think my daughter is just an average student. She can’t find anything on her acceptance letter or on her portal that indicates anything else. Is she still competitive for any sort of scholarships? We were all set to send her to a Fl. school, when out of the blue, UA accepted her! This is the only OOS school she has applied to. I’m getting nervous about how we are going to pay for UA since she doesn’t appear to have the high SAT scores or the heavily weighted GPA that others have. None of the FL schools have responded back yet…

You’d probably get more responses if you posted this in the University of Alabama forum.

The Alabama website lays out the requirements for the Honors College as well as the guaranteed scholarships. Here’s the honors college site: http://honors.ua.edu/. And here’s information on OOS scholarships: http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/out-of-state.html.

Crimson Edge is a program to provide students who might be borderline with additional support to help them make the transition to college. The program would be referenced in the acceptance letter if the student was expected to participate in Crimson Edge. If your daughter is an average student, it’s unlikely she’d need Crimson Edge. IIRC, scholarships are not mentioned on the acceptance letter; a separate letter comes a couple weeks later. However, you will know from the website whether she qualifies for the guaranteed scholarships. I believe there are additional scholarships available that are not guaranteed, but I think many of those use the same scholarship application. I know the alumni association in my area gives a scholarship as well (that would require a separate application), but I’m not sure how you find out about those.

Thank you!

Why would Alabama be a better choice than a Florida school? It will most likely be cheaper to stay instate if she’s not getting big merit from an OOS school.

You are right…it will be much cheaper for her to stay in Fl., but none of the schools she has applied to have
responded back. She is getting the run around from UCF, and now she found out that her transcripts have not been sent to FGCU. She has also applied to UF and FSU, but they don’t announce until February. She will not commit until then…but she is just so excited about Alabama that it is killing me to even suggest that she can’t go there…:frowning:

If she applied in the first group, she’ll hear from UF and FSU in december. If she didn’t apply in october, then she has to wait. She can go to Alabama, it will just cost you more.

Does she have a 3.5? If she does are her scores close to one of UA’s merit scholarships? If they are I believe they take the Dec ACT & SAT maybe she could take them and have the score she needs for merit aid?

I hope your daughter can consider this acceptance as a good thing, a ‘hey, I’m going to college’ moment, even if you still have to wait to see what the best offer is.

I think she may become just as excited about other offers she receives. The first acceptance is special though and she should be happy of it.

Taking a twist on a line from Modern Family, when my daughter’s first acceptance came we got an ice cream cake with “You’re going to College!” on it. That was never in doubt and she was accepted to 14 other schools (I know applied to a ton), but that first acceptance is indeed special whether it is the student’s first choice or last choice.

post edit - the line from Modern Family was when Haley had been rejected from every college and it was down to the last and only remaining college she applied to. She opened the letter to find she had been waitlisted. Phil exclaims with all his pride, sincerity, and joy, “My daughter might be going to college!” Classic.

^^ I was going to ask you-was this when Haley got waitlisted or when Alex was rejected from Harvard and Claire bought a teddy bear with a t shirt that said "Harvard Sucks’.

I am entirely too wrapped up in that show, lol. I now want ducks.

To keep this on topic, I was also wondering if the honors colleges specifically chase the kid-we keep getting stuff from UA, but D16’s numbers are more in line with UA honors, so we don’t know if the UA meet and greets are for regular colleges, or they include the honors college, as well.
