Chief Justice Rehnquist died tonight at age 80. What do you think we're up for now, with a Bush nominated chief? horrors

I don't want to think. lol. It seems everything's happening at once...

It doesn't really matter. Rhenquist was quite conservative. O'Connor's replacement (Roberts) was the one everyone was eager to find out.

I think the departure of both OConnor and Rehnquist from the court will prove very important. With them, Bush has the opportunity to secure the conservative leanings of the court for decades to come. I mean, Rehnquist was a justice for over 30 years- a figure Roberts, who is only 50, could easily match. If Bush appoints another young justice to replace Rehnquist, combined with the somewhat young republicans already on the court (Thomas isn't even 60, if i'm not mistaken, and Scalia doesn't seem to be slowing down), it will seal the political direction of the court for a long time.

Basically, I'm terrified. lol.

DOOM AND DESTRUCTION ACROSS THE LAND!!!

But yeah, somebodynew's right. Rehnquist's replacement, however conservative, probably wouln't change the political balance of the court as much as O'Connor's did, because he was already so conservative, while she was relatively moderate. But who knows? We'll have to wait and see.

I'm begging that Bush will nominate a moderate. After all, it IS the chief, and he's supposed to serve as a median between the liberals and conservatives of the court. However, I don't think that's going to happen, knowing Bush's aggressiveness in politics. We'll see.

I feel sorry for you all...:( God help you!!

Bush doesn't need to care about his popularity as he doesn't need to run for re-election. Thus it wouldn't be a huge disadvantage for him to nominate a conservative judge. However, that may decrease the popularity for the GOP for the upcoming 2006 Senate race.

However Republican Rehnquist was, it would probably favor the Democrats if he died later during a Democratic president's term. And I don't like it when people use liberal synonymously with democrat or conservative synonymously with republican because not all liberals are democrats and not all democrats are liberal. Same with Republicans.

why are you sorry? ohh I see, UK.

of simfish those r losers. I HATE those prejudiced liberals who are so AVID to judge me as a Republican as soon as i talk against ONE issue. It is so annoying and they think they are so smart and they despise the South as rednecks huh? No offense to the intellectual ones but I've been increasingly been aware that there are a lot of liberals who don't know what the heck is going on or what others think. Conservatives are people btw. They have human feelings and they are just like anyone in terms of a person so any person stupid enough to judge their character on political affiliations is the BIGGEST LOSER out there not to mention someone who is hypocritically proclaiming tolerance when they have no tolerance for those with different opinions.

The second term is all about legacy so i think bush will appoint a conservative. I am hoping for a moderate as i am moderate. But a slight conservative i wouldn't mind as i am turning skeptical of a "big government" and am starting to approve of states' rights. It will a big change as when Burger(a real name btw) or even Warren was appointed. I personally don't like some of their rulings but i do agree that it is important.

I'm confused. Were my comments offensive in any way? What I meant by "same with republicans" was that not all conservatives are Republican and not all Republicans are conservative. It doesn't always work out that way.

uh no. i was agreeing to ur

Ah I see. Sorry, I got a little scared.

Just so you know, no matter which side you're on, you're going to feel preyed upon. I'm pretty liberal (more Green, but they will never get office, so Democrat), and I have plenty of Republicans jump for my throat. I have friends who are Republicans, and they complain about Democrats jumping them. Honestly, I don't think eitherside is more liked/disliked or whatever. There are plenty of people that have argued with me that don't know what's going on. That's the way the U.S. goes. Some people think they've seen all of Arnold Schwaezenaggers (spelled VERY wrong) movies, therefore they know politiks. shrugs

I do fear for what Bush will do though. As much as I despise the man, he will be the most talked about president for quite some while.

Roberts is now the nominee for chief. Get ready for another 30 years.
