My D1 received a fat envelope yesterday inviting her to the 2012 Reilly weekend in April. We assume she is accepted (hooray!!!!) but we are not familiar with the weekend. Anyone else going?

I found these sites… They have some interesting info!

Thanks. I grad from ND yrs ago and we didn’t have a “reilly” or “diversity” weekend…I think only the athletes were recruited!!! My D is so excited to be invited; our only visit was on a 95 degree, humid July day and I thought if she loved ND then, she’ll be fine in the long dark frigid days of winter.

The ND website says that the Reilly Weekend was in late February. Is this a second installment?

I think the February weekend for for ED admits and the one in April is for RD… Maybe?

Makes sense. And since you appear to be connected to Stanford, you’re probably right.

Yes. D is an RD applicant.

^^^^what state are you in? Close to ND?

I actually got the same package yesterday! My friend was at Reilly 2012 for EA and yeah i think we’re in.

East coast. NYC.

So since these are RD candidates these would be the top RD candidates? What would be the quantitative essentials of a top RD candidate invited to Reilly?

@stanford78 I think the selection process for Reilly students is kind of like the admissions process at most selective colleges. They take into account the objectives (standardized testing, GPA, etc.) as well as the subjectives (essays and recommendations from your application, etc.) and make judgement calls. I do think that the students they select are students who they consider likely to be accepted at other elite schools. In his speech at our closing banquet about why we should attend Notre Dame instead of other selective schools, the keynote speaker specifically named Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, and Duke. As far as quantitatives go, I can say that I know that most of my friends from Reilly and I are presidential scholar candidates.

@sha1of2 Well, this is probably way more information than you want, but here you go. I went in February and had a great time. The students who organize it went to Reilly when they were seniors, and they are very intent on making the weekend as enjoyable as possible for the students. We were fed VERY well and VERY often. We were allowed to do a lot of things that really familiarized us with ND such as attending classes, hanging out in Recker’s and La Fortune, working out at the gyms, and going to dorm mass. There are some scheduled events, but there are also optional events, so there are times when students can choose not to participate in an organized activity and spend that time doing other things they would like to do on campus instead. They make it very obvious that they are trying to sell Notre Dame to you, and I think most of us were very flattered that such an elite university was “recruiting” us. Reilly really succeeds in showing students why Notre Dame is a university like no other. All in all, it was the best weekend of my year so far, and I love Notre Dame so much more now than I did before I went. I really think your daughter should take advantage of this great opportunity.

Sasbmar, thank you so much. I would be thrilled if my D went to ND and she is planning to attend the weekend; we just weren’t sure how much free time or time with students she’d have. She is already accepted to Yale but she feels ND is a better fit (at her prep school here, turning down an Ivy is unheard of but my D is an independent thinker). I am grateful ND will let her see what it’s like to be a student and only wish all the kids who want to be at ND were given this opportunity. We do feel blessed.

ND (like Stanford, Duke, Vandy) are considered “Reaches” for my DD but she’s definitely “in the hunt” (ACT 31; 4.38 GPA - the subjectives all solid) so that would probably mean she wouldn’t be invited to the Reilly weekend.

There are a lot of fabulous students admitted to and attending ND who did not get Reilly invites.

My perspective on who gets invited to Reilly is based on a sample size of two. Both sons had great recs, strong EC’s, thoughtful essays, multiple AP classes, “most rigorous” coursework available. S1 did not get invited to Reilly. S1 scores: SAT 2250+/-, ACT 34, class rank 3/250, GPA 3.96/4.0. S2 was invited to Reilly. S2 scores: SAT 2360, ACT 35, National Merit Scholar, Presidential Scholar candidate, HS valedictorian, GPA 4.0/4.0.

What did you feed those kids?!

… :)

@Greta I completely agree. All of the students admitted at Notre Dame are extremely talented, but they only invite 300 kids to Reilly every year (150 each session). Not getting invited certainly doesn’t say anything about a person’s talent or lack thereof.

@Greta, I’m with Stanford…what did you feed those boys? I think YOU should be invited to Reilly weekend Good job mom!!!

@Greta
woww i was none of those things and i somehow got the invite!
